About Katy:

As I’ve been running this blog for about six months, I think it’s finally time to write a slightly lengthier “about me” description!

I’m (still) a 26 year old attorney in Manhattan, and I suppose I can now call myself a fairly decent cook (as well as an enthusiastic farmer’s market groupie, and a delightful dinner-party host, if I do say so myself!).

Why did I learn to cook, being already a) busy as anything, and b) surrounded by amazing restaurants in New York City?  It was certainly not an impulse I’d harbored for the early part of my life — I was never a child who helped in the kitchen, preferring to spend my holidays lounging lazily on the couch or in front of the computer, rather than risk the hectic and frantic turkey-roasting or apple-pie-decorating that others in my family enjoyed so much.  But as I got older, I realized that it’s possible to cook the same way that I do most other things, in a relaxed, straightforward, non-frantic, and utterly enjoyable way.

It did not come easy.  For my first dinner party, I served frozen veggie burgers on storebought english muffins, with salad from a bag and dressing from a bottle.  And my guests sat around for half an hour before I realized I’d accidentally cut off the air supply to the grill, extinguishing the heat (whoops).  But, despite the mistakes, despite the humble (ok, pathetic) food, it was a great night.

So I tried again.  And again, and again, and again.  Sometimes with spectacular failures, but more and more with tasty and memorable successes.  And after each cooking, baking, or new ingredient discovery, I flooded my poor family and friends’ email-boxes with photos of my creations.

And then, one weekend, I thought, why not start a blog?  I was already geting most of my recipes from other cooking blogs, why not add my own contributions to the mix?  And out of that whim, sugarlaws was born.

I have now posted over a hundred recipes, and a good portion of my nights, weekends, gym time, and lying-in-bed-trying-to-fall-asleep time is suddenly filled with imagining new recipes, or thinking of twists for classic dishes, or listing the traditionally “challenging” recipes that I can’t wait to try!

More than I ever imagined before starting this little blog, it has become my favorite hobby — from the wonderful comments and helpful tips from those of you who read about what I’ve created, to the hair-pulling hours of attempting to format the backgrounds and layout of this site, and, above all, the countless afternoons and evenings in my little Manhattan kitchen, attempting to create dishes that are interesting, special, and above all, delicious.  I am loving every moment of it.

So, if you have read this far, that’s a little bit about me.  Any more questions?  Email me – I’m always thrilled to hear from you!

Congratulations on the bold step. I was lucky, learning as a child, but I really admire adults to set out to do it. It seems scary for most, but cooking is so rewarding.

I kind of stumbled onto your blog and I love it. I am sure you hear this very often if your comments are any sign, you are incredibly beautiful.

I find it very refreshing that there is a woman who is not only beautiful but exudes an obvious intelligence.

Your blog is very well written and I find myself long to read more.

So, has your legal training influenced your cooking? I know that my science and logic background has influenced mine.

And where do you get the time to blog? Look at all these posts commenting on how beautiful you are. I was going to try and fix you up with a friend of mine, even. ;-) He recently moved to Manhattan.

It’s a funny thing what nonprofessionals concentrate on vs. professionals. Oh, I recently posted a recipe on marzipan that you might like. Try it out. That’ll take up a lot of your time. One weekend may not be enough time to make them all but you can always cut the recipe in half.

Hello, just was referred to your blog by bakingbites. When I click on these sorts of referrals I always browse the blog’s recipes, and frankly, it usually doesn’t take me long to go “uh, no….” However, after viewing a bunch of your entries, I have become ravenous, and I just ate lunch(!). I am an experienced user of food blogs (and a graduate of a culinary school), and I think yours may go to the top of the list. I can’t wait to try a whole bunch of recipes from your blog, and may just start with the pretzels tonight.

I enjoy reading your blog a lot, its one of the few blogs I get excited about when my blog-ticker pops up and states you have a new entry!

However, I have a wimpy foodblog and was wondering…uh…could you help me create a good looking one, like this one?
