a little drama

We actually wound up staying in for New Year’s Eve, but if I’d gone out, this is unquestionably what I would have worn.  My mom got me this maternity dress for Christmas, and I have to say: it’s like no other maternity dress I’ve ever seen.

And by that, I mean: it actually looks like just a cute dress.

I knew going into pregnancy that maternity clothes had improved a lot (they have!) but they were still a bit of a fashion wasteland.  It’s not totally the designers’ fault — women’s bodies vary so much from week to week and month to month, it’s nearly impossible to design things that work on everyone.

And yet… for someone who cares deeply about fashion, it can sometimes be a little sad that your options are so limited.

I’ve been tackling this in two ways: First, I’m trying to mostly buy maternity clothes that I’d wear post-pregnancy as well.  Since getting pregnant, I’ve bought a few (almost mandatory) pairs of maternity jeans, and a handful of tops.  For dresses, I have this one and one more, but mostly I’ve been gravitating towards non-maternity stretchy pieces that work with a bump or without.  And I’ve been picking mostly lower price points, so that if I stretch out some tops or sweaters as I get bigger, it’s not the end of the world.  (Express and Forever 21 have basically become my go-to spots for those!)

Second, accessories.  As I’ve been picking out simple outfits, I’m a lot more focused on the accessories — from these Tiffany & Co. bracelets to this amazing L’Wren Scott for Banana Republic clutch!  They add tons of drama no matter what your body shape is — and they’re an easy way to up the style quotient of an outfit with hardly any effort!

And yes, I’m still in heels… for now at least!
