Holiday Beauty

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I *love* this time of the year.

I love picking out presents for our friends and families, feeling the excitement of the new year about to start, and — obviously — getting glammed up for night after night of fabulous holiday parties!

But as we started dressing up more frequently a few weeks ago, I started to realize: my make-up routine was in a rut.  More than a rut — my makeup routine has pretty much been the same, every single day, for like TWO YEARS (basically a streamlined version of the products I wrote about in this post).  Sure, sometimes I experiment with a lipstick or a new blush, but pretty much, I’ve been doing the exact same thing every morning for the last, oh, 700 days or so.

So obviously it was time to brainstorm some new beauty looks!  I like to keep my makeup pretty minimal, so I wanted something that wouldn’t look too dramatic — just pretty, glowing, and easy to recreate time after time.

First, I started with smooth and moisturized skin — which isn’t easy at this time of the year!  I apply Simple Skincare Replenishing Rich Moisturizer at night, and Simple Skincare Protecting Light Moisturizer in the morning before I put on my makeup.  During the summer, I can sometimes get away with moisturizing once a day, but during the winter, twice is an absolute must.  (And sun protection is crucial, even during the winter, so make sure to use at least SPF 15!) Then I used concealer under my eyes and a light layer of Cle de Peau foundation, to create a smooth, even and radiant base.

Since I usually do a brown smokey eye, I picked a look that was a lot more subtle and natural — the eyeshadow here is white and pale pink (from Mark.’s Tenth Anniversary Compact), and it’s crazy how much brighter and more refreshed the effect is!  I also used a black liner from Urban Decay to give a little bit of definition around my eyes, and then smudged it with white liner (COVERGIRL Flamed Out Shadow Pencil) to tone it down a little.

For the cheeks, I usually combine blush and bronzer, but since I haven’t been getting spray tans since I found out I was pregnant, I thought I’d play up my pale skin in this look!  I used soft pink blush from Mark. and Estée Lauder Illuminating Powder Gelée to get glowing cheeks with just a hint of pink.

Last, I blended three lipsticks and glosses to create this neutral, glossy lip!  I started with a base of Estée Lauder Pure Color lipstick in Spiked Toffee, and then blended Aerin lip gloss in Festive.  Then I added just a hint of Estée Lauder Pure Color lip gloss in Frivolous Pink to finish it off!

What do you think?  Now that I’m out of my beauty rut, what other holiday looks should I try out?

NYFW Beauty: The Good, The Bad, The Wackadoodle Crazy

October 9th, 2013 · 4 Comments

The one thing you can always count on at New York Fashion Week: Spectacle.  No matter what you’re expecting, there’s always some designer to take a big risk with crazy accessories or totally unique hair and makeup.  Sometimes it’s an awesome addition to a show, sometimes it’s distracting and maybe not the best choice.  But it’s always interesting.

So I thought I’d do a little recap of some of the trends I saw, from the ones that I’m excited to try out, to the ones that aren’t for me, to the ones that some of you braver readers might be interested in. :-)

Good: Luminous Makeup

Candela is always one of my favorite shows (it’s hard to believe they were a new discovery to me just a few seasons ago) and this year, they knocked it out of the park with their models’ gorgeous hair and makeup.  EVerything was flawless, from the rosy cheeky to the dewy skin: to me, this makeup is perfect.

Good: Minimal Makeup

The clothes were so fierce at Matthieu Mirano that I almost didn’t notice at first that the models were hardly wearing any makeup!  I love the juxtaposition of tough-girl clothes (black leather bralets, wow) with a completely natural face, so this one was a home run for me.  Things to remember when you’re recreating this natural look: you can still use foundation to add contour and definition to your features, just keep it light and natural.  And always start out with a clean and moisturized face (I recommend Simple Skincare’s Hydrating Light Moisturizer with SPF) so your skin can take center stage!

Good: Bold Blush

Pale skin with bold blush is Just. So. Pretty.  I snapped this quick pic of one of the models backstage at Peter Som and just totally fell in love.  It’s a good reminder to venture beyond my normal pale-pink/golden-bronze cheek colors, because a swipe of bold blush is such a beautiful, fashion-foward look!

Not So Good: Dark Under-Eye Liner

I loved the clothes and the presentation generally, but to me, this makeup was a miss.  Putting such heavy black liner under the eyes did nothing for the models’ pretty features, and the room was so hot that you could see them sweating.  (If only they had Simple Skincare Radiance Wipes!)

Good: Messy Updos

Usually I’m not the biggest fan of updos generally, but this season, there were some gorgeous messy updo looks.  I loved the hand-twisted knot at Peter Som and this crimped bun at Tracy Reese.  The techniques were totally different — at Peter Som, the texture was created using Wella’s Ocean Spritz and then blow-drying upwards from the roots, and at Tracy Reese, the stylists created texture by crimping the models’ hair before styling the bun.  Both are cool techniques that I can’t wait to try out!

Wackadoodle: Two-Tone Bobs

First, I have to set your mind at ease: these are wigs.  I wasn’t sure at first, but every single model came out with the exact same style, so at that point I felt reasonably confident that they hadn’t chopped and dyed the hair of a dozen or so runway models.  But what do you guys think of the two-tone bob?  I thought it was pretty cool and worked with the clothes, but it isn’t exactly a look I’m going to replicate anytime soon.

Wackadoodle: Body Tattoos

Only at Fashion Week, huh?  Truth be told, I kind of loved this full arm tattoo when I spotted it backstage at Tracy Reese.  I’m a big fan of temporary tattoos, and sometimes wear them on the weekends — so I’m kind of digging that the fashion world is embracing them!  What do you guys think — would you ever try this out?

VMA Party!

As part of my collaboration with COVERGIRL to serve as a COVERGIRL Beauty Ambassador, I have received products and been compensated for my time.

How fun were the VMAs last night? We had a BLAST at my house — a nice, cozy group of girlfriends, some delicious snacks, a little wine, and of course, fabulous COVERGIRL makeovers!

Two trends we saw a ton of on the red carpet: natural makeup and bold, red lips! These are two of our absolute favorites here in Texas, so almost all of us went for some variation on those!

Being the host has it’s perks, so I got to go first. Here’s what Aubrie did for me:

First of all…. swoon. There’s nothing like getting real, professional makeup, am I right? I’ve gotten pretty good at doing mine myself, but she is just so talented. And this whole look used just a couple of products!

We started with COVERGIRL Flamed Out eyeshadow pencils around the eyes, to give me a little bit of brightness and make my eyes really pop (we used the Silver Flame and Crystal Flame shades), and then lined my eyes with COVERGIRL Ink It! eye pencil in black for a little drama. But the real star of the look was the mascara — do you see how crazy long and defined my lashes are in the picture? That’s from COVERGIRL Flamed Out mascara, which is brand new and AMAZING! I actually haven’t used a drugstore mascara in a while, but I was blown away by this one! We finished off the look with COVERGIRL Smoochies Lip Balm in a frosty pink shade called #cu l8r (so cute)! I’m seriously obsessed and will definitely be recreating this look myself!

And we had such a blast watching the red carpet and the show! Obviously our favorite moment was the (too short!) ‘N Sync reunion, but I also loved getting to see all the edgy glam looks coming down the red carpet! Selena and Ciara were our favorite looks of the night, and cutie COVERGIRL Becky G. was looking gorgeous! (Apparently Becky G. and I have similar taste in makeup — she was wearing the Flamed Out mascara and Ink It! liner too!) And, of course, the COVERGIRL x Hunger Games collection commercial was a huge highlight — if you missed it during the show, it’s on YouTube now and looks SO COOL!

Also, the food! We got some delicious, healthy bites from Ruggles Green, one of my favorite restaurants in Houston! This city has made MAJOR progress in the last few years in embracing local, organic ingredients, and Ruggles is one of my absolute favorites. We got three types of salad, pizzas, fish and chicken tacos, hummus and veggies, and their delicious goat cheese dip — yum!

And, of course, I also had to pick up some sweets for later in the night: salted caramel cupcakes, petit fours, and mini bundt cakes and cinnamon rolls! Throw in a little bubbly and a little rose, and we were ready for a serious party!

And, of course, the makeovers! We had such a blast, and there was so much variety on the red carpet to choose from! Some of us rocked bold lips, and others went for smokey eyes and natural or coral lip shades — and everyone looked gorgeous!
