nyfw: fall 2013 beauty trends

I spend so much time at Fashion Week paying attention to the clothes, sometimes I forget that hair and makeup is a crucial part of every show! And just like with clothes, there’s such a huge variety that it’s sometimes hard to pick out what’s an overarching trend and what’s specific to each designer’s aesthetic. But I wanted to give you guys a sense of what I saw in a little bit more detail, so I’ve tried to boil it down to a few trends!

Above: Piecey Beach Waves at Candela

I always like my hair best when I haven’t brushed it in a while, which is exactly this style. To get this at home, use a clampless curling iron and leave the bottom inch uncurled, then comb out with your fingers (not a brush!) and use a little bit of spray. To keep the waves subtle and natural, start the curl at your jawbone or lower, and only curl from that point down. This is one of the easiest looks to recreate at home, so you guys should definitely try it!

Natural Skin and a Bold Lip at Noon By Noor

I loved, loved, LOVED the hair and makeup for this show. The perfect red lip was timeless and so glam, as were the vintage Hollywood curls — they paired seamlessly with everything from 60’s preppy knits and scarves to lavish gowns.

To get this look at home, let your skin be the star by keeping it smooth and hydrated! See how her skin looks like it’s glowing? That’s the goal. Try a light moisturizer that won’t irritate your skin (I swear by Simple Skincare’s Vital Vitamin Day Cream!) to avoid any redness that could ruin this look! Keep your makeup simple and bare and choose a matte red for your lips — everyone’s favorite red is different, but the look for this show had slight orange undertones — perfect for winter-y glamour!

Bold Brows and a Wine-Colored Lip at Parkchoonmoo

Even more so than a red lip, you have to keep the rest of your makeup understated but balanced to match a wine-colored lip. Try a subtle smokey eye in shades of light brown, and swap your blush for a matte bronzer to achieve this pretty, polished look. And the sleek ponytail never goes out of style!

Oversized Eyelashes at Nina Skarra

Kids, don’t try this at home. Dramatic false lashes are huge parts of NYFW, but to adapt them for everyday life, you want to tone them down by about 95%. Instead of using these editorial-worthy lashes, dot a few individual falsies around the corners of your eyes and then line with jet black liquid eyeliner for an instant perk-up. One of the best parts about fashion week is taking the high-level trends and adapting them to use at home, and this one is perfectly suited to it! (And to take it all off at the end, try Simple Skincare’s makeup wipes!)

Hair Prints at CZAR

Ok, I have no idea how they did this — some form of spray paint/stencil maybe? So freaking cool.  Color definitely wasn’t limited to clothes this season, with models at Nicole Miller, Carmen Marc Valvo and CZAR sporting major pops of color. The orange and yellow ombre at Nicole Miller was the model’s own, but to steal their idea (temporarily), check out my video on using hair chalk here.

And when all else fails, stick a clock on your head and call it a day:

(I kid, I kid: the Raphael Cennamo show was stunning and I can’t wait to show you guys more pictures from it!)

(any) holiday beauty!

HolidayBeauty1

I got home this week, and the craziest thing had happened: While I’d been gone, our cleaning lady had taken down our Christmas tree!  Usually we leave it up for months (in New York, my parents had to drive into the city and pick it up, because we didn’t have a place to store it… Needless to say, that usually didn’t happen until June or so), so I wasn’t quite psychologically ready to be done with it yet!

But when the Christmas tree is gone, you know your post on holiday beauty is officially long overdue!  Chad and I had a low key holiday season (much needed), but I still found time to experiment with some new beauty trends!  And both of these will work perfectly for Valentine’s Day too — no need to save all the glam for December!

Bold, Bright Lips

You know how everyone says there’s a perfect red lipstick for every skin tone?  I didn’t really believe that until a few months ago.  I’d found a cherry pink that I really liked, but real red?  Never.  I’d tried so many times, but no luck.

But during a photoshoot this fall, the awesome makeup artist handed me Beauty For Real gloss in ‘Light My Fire‘ — and since then, I’ve totally embraced red lips!  So perfect for the holidays — instant glam.

When you’re doing a bold lip, keep everything else pretty simple!  I used my everyday brown/copper eye makeup, and kept my skin smooth and nourished with Vital Vitamin Day Cream from Simple Skincare!  I love that it has SPF 15, which you need in the winter too!

Kate Middleton Waves

I know, I know.  My obsession with Kate Middleton basically has no bounds.  I had a dream a few weeks ago that she and I were best friends, and we spent an awesome afternoon picking out her pregnancy outfits.  (Basically the best dream I’ve ever had.)

I did a full tutorial on how to get her gorgeous waves here, but since it was a full two years ago, I figured I’d give you guys a refresher.  The technique is pretty simple — you just blowdry your hair smooth and straight, and then use a large barrel curler (mine is 1.5 inches) from about your jawline to your ends.  Brush them out, and voila!  Kate’s pretty, voluminous waves.

go sleeveless for the holidays!

December 19th, 2012 · 7 Comments

So, here’s the thing: last year at this time, I was settling into my first true southern winter.  Which means, you know: eighty degree temperatures.  Shorts.  Sandals.  Blooming flowers.  And, obviously, sleeveless dresses.

Needless to say, I was *psyched.* I embraced sleeveless holiday dresses like it was my job — and I’m doing the same thing this year!

But it’s not just a southern thing!  Did you know that six out of ten women are likely to wear sleeveless clothing to a holiday party this year?  There’s something about the holiday season that makes people want to be a little more festive, and what better way to achieve that than a great sleeveless cocktail dress?

I’ve been using Dove’s Go Sleeveless Soothing Chamomile Deodorant to get ready for all of our holiday parties, and I love the smell and the softness it gives your skin!  It improves your skin in five days with Vitamins E and F plus Dove ¼ moisturizers, so there’s just enough time for you guys to go sleeveless for your holiday parties!  Another perk is 48 hour wetness and odor protection!  Learn more on Facebook.com/Dove.

Alice + Olivia dress (other colors here), Guiseppe Zanotti heels, Stella McCartney bag (found at T.J. Maxx), gifted Tory Burch bracelet.
