Maybe it’s to be expected, but lately, I’ve found myself gravitating towards much more natural, no-makeup type looks. I’m not saying no makeup at all (let’s be serious), but the type of look where you aren’t quite sure if there’s makeup involved, or if the person is just genetically blessed.
Because the best compliment isn’t when someone tells you that you have on great makeup, it’s when someone tells you that you’re glowing, or that you just look great.
So when Simple Skincare asked me to create a look that goes along with their core philosophy — no dyes, no artificial fragrances, no harsh irritants for your skin — I was happy to get to work!
So here’s what I used in this look:
Simple Skincare Kind to Skin Refreshing Facial Wash Gel: This is my favorite of the cleansers so far, although some of you in harsher climates might prefer the Kind to Skin Moisturizing Facial Wash! I love that it leaves my skin cleansed, revived and ready for makeup, and that it really perks me up in the morning when I’m getting ready. A+.
Cle de Peau Fluid Foundation: I’ve been using this for a while now, and it’s the lightest-feeling foundation I’ve found that still gives you good coverage. It’s expensive, though, so to make it last longer, I like to combine it with…
Simple Skincare Kind to Skin Hydrating Light Moisturizer: Mixing foundation and moisturizer or concealer and moisturizer can give you a lighter, more natural effect, and it’s great for your skin at the same time. And hey, anything that saves me a step in my morning makeup routine is terrific in my book. (I switch off to the Kind to Skin Vital Vitamin Night Cream at night!)
Estée Lauder Pure Color Blush in Peach Passion: I’ve worn this every day since I got it. This collection doesn’t launch until May (sorry guys!) but you guys are going to die when it does. My old favorite blush was Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess, but I finally hit the bottom of the compact back in December, and I hadn’t found anything else that I liked nearly as much… until this one came along.
L’Oreal Voluminous Lashes Mascara: I bought this on a whim in the drugstore the other day, because the brush looked a lot like the brush for my beloved DIORSHOW, and CVS was offering $5 off a $15 purchase. The picture above is actually the first time I used it! I’m actually fairly impressed so far — for $9.99 (vs. $24 for DIORSHOW, which has to be replaced every 60 days or so), I’ll probably buy this again. I like how thick and dark my lashes look — even in a natural-makeup look, great lashes are still key.
And to take it all off at the end of the day, the Simple Skincare Eye Make-up Remover is the gentlest one I’ve ever tried. LOVE it.
The last few weeks and the next few weeks are just about the busiest I’ve ever been, so it’s no surprise that I have to take extra special care of my skin when things are extra crazy!
So it was perfect timing when this box of Simple Skincare goodies arrived last weekend — I couldn’t wait to try them! These will be available in stores in February, but lucky me got to try the whole line a few weeks ahead of the official launch! So far I’m obsessed with the Kind to Skin Vital Vitamin Night Cream and the Kind to Skin Hydrating Light Moisturizer — both are amazing!
But until the official launch, a few important skincare tips that are applicable to any products:
Beat Weather Woes: Winter weather — even in Houston — is tough on anyone’s skin. Artificial indoor heat, cold winter winds, and hectic holiday schedules are brutal, so moisturizer is key (morning and night)! And don’t forget that even when it’s cold out, sunscreen is still a necessity!
Be Cost-Conscious: Don’t spend more than you can afford on beauty products! There are great products out there at every price range, and you want a product that you won’t be counting the dollars every time you use! A drugstore brand that you can actually use every night is way better than a $500 bottle you try to ration over a year!
Patch Test: Even with products like Simple Skincare, which are specifically designed for sensitive skin, I always test products out on my wrist or arm before using them on my face. It’s a good practice to get into, since the last thing anyone wants is a bad reaction to a new product! But I didn’t have any trouble with any of the Simple Skincare products I’ve tried — the bonus of products that are kind to your skin!
Think from the Inside Out: It’s not just what you put on your skin that matters! What you eat and drink is just as important. So be sure to chug water throughout the day (I’m partial to plain seltzer, but that’s just me), and load up on salmon, fruits and veggies for a healthy, natural glow.
So those are a few of mine — what are your favorite skincare tips and tricks?
So besides how adorable Calvin is in the photo below, I really love this hairstyle!
This is basically my go-to for any day where I want my hair out of my face, but I don’t really want to spend a lot of time on it. I actually wore it for a day of New York Fashion Week, in part because braids are basically the most stylish hairstyle you can actually create yourself at home!
I could try to describe how to do this braid, but the easiest way to do it yourself it just to watch the video! And if you guys try this, make sure to send me pictures — I can’t wait to see them!
Also, I know this is silly, but today is 11/11/11! Be sure to make a wish. 🙂 I know I’m silly and superstitious, but who could pass up a day like that as an opportunity?! I wish for a zillion million dollars. And world peace.
(Just kidding — obviously, if I told you guys, it wouldn’t come true! But world peace wouldn’t be SO bad…)
I bet a few times a week, you guys might just dab on a little lip gloss and call it a day, no?
Ok, I’ve done it too. But you know what lasts about ten minutes? Lip gloss on its own. To do a serious colored lip, you need way more than that one tiny step.
One of the best pieces of advice that I get over and over again from professional makeup artists, is that there are no shortcuts. If you want a look that’s as great as the celeb who sits still for an hour or two to get her makeup done, you have to learn (and recreate) all the steps that they use.
Fortunately, for lips, there are really just three crucial steps: a serious lipcolor, full liner to fill and emphasize your pucker, and then a gorgeous gloss to set everything and give some additional shine. And then do it all over again for serious staying power.
I’ve been wearing this coral shade from Estée Lauder all the time — usually I’m more of a neutral lip girl, but the color in this shade is so flattering that it’s become one of my absolute favorites. Paired with a subtle shimmering gloss and smooth liner, and you can’t get a prettier pout.
I know it’s been a while since I’ve done a makeup video! I have so many fun ones coming up — I can’t wait to show you guys!
