Three Steps to Staying Stress-Free and Well Rested on Black Friday

November 28th, 2014 · No Comments

Black-Friday-Final

Black Friday is a major undertaking. You wake up early, drive to the stores, stand in line, and you’re so busy that you barely have time to eat. All that hustle and bustle can leave you feeling frazzled and looking tired.

The good news is that this is an easy fix. Just follow a few healthy rules and you’ll look refreshed and feel stress-free from the last sale until you go home with the goods.

Here are my tips to looking beautiful on Black Friday, all day long:

Go to Bed Early
Planning to hit those door busters at 5 a.m.? Then get your beauty rest the night before. Aim for at least seven hours of sleep, which means you’ll be hitting the sheets around 9:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving night.

Before going to bed, make sure to moisturize with the Simple Skincare Nourishing 24 Day/Night Cream to protect your skin at night and into the next day.

Plan Ahead
Black Friday is all about the planning. You need a game plan for which stores you want to hit, which presents are must-buys and which can be scoped out as you go.  Take a notepad with you or make a list using an app on your phone to make sure you don’t forget a crucial gift!

Carry Nutritious Snacks
With all the stress of Black Friday shopping, it’s easy to forget that your body needs nourishment. Whether you skipped breakfast to get out of the house at 4:30 a.m. or you’re facing rows of sugary or greasy food from the mall food court, you’re better off planning ahead and carrying healthy snacks.  Great options are fresh fruit, nuts, granola bars and, of course, bottled water to stay hydrated.

And When It’s All Over?
Go home, pour a cup of tea, put your feet up, and smile.  The wrapping can wait for tomorrow.

Vegan Thanksgiving Idea: Maple-Glazed Acorn Squash

November 14th, 2014 · No Comments

Maple-Glazed-Acorn-Squash-Final-1

I was a vegetarian for more than a decade — and it was never more challenging than at holiday meals.

“You don’t want turkey?  But what will you eat?” I’d hear time and again, no matter how many other dishes there were to choose from.  People assumed that I needed turkey made of tofu and without that, I’d be completely unsatisfied.

But that couldn’t be further from the truth.  Holiday dinners are the perfect opportunity to try out delicious vegetable dishes — winter squash and turnips and potatoes are hearty enough for anyone to enjoy.

So this holiday season, consider trying this a vegan-friendly dish to your table.  It’s beautiful, hearty and delicious, and the acorn squash contains antioxidants like Vitamin C, E and B6.  Your skin will appreciate the health benefits… even if you have an extra slice of pie for dessert!

Three Surprising Cold Weather Essentials for Healthy Skin

November 13th, 2014 · 1 Comment

Cold weather can make you want to curl up and hibernate for a few months.  Between being stuck indoors, flu season, and fewer daylight hours, keeping your mood cheerful can be a challenge during the chilly months.  But as it gets cold outside, these tips will keep your spirits up until summer comes along again!

Relax in the Bath.  Bathtime isn’t a luxury for me — it’s a necessity.  When it’s frigid outside, sometimes the first thing I do when I get home is go straight to the bathroom and get the hot water going.  A few minutes soaking in a warm bubble bath does wonders for the mind and the body.  Be sure to apply a nourishing moisturizer like Simple Skincare Replenishing Rich Moisturizer afterwards to beat dry winter skin!

Ten Minutes of Mindfulness.  One of my favorite tricks to boosting my mood is to incorporate five or ten minutes of daily meditation.  It’s crucial in the winter months, when the winter blues can raise levels of stress and anxiety.  For just a few minutes a day, find a quiet place to sit and focus on your breathing.  You’ll be surprised what a difference it makes!

Whip Up a Delicious Dish. There are so many delicious vegetables in season during the colder months, it’s the perfect time to try your favorite root veggie dish.  I’ve been eyeing Elie Krieger’s Curried Pumpkin and Tomato Soup recipe — it looks like the perfect cold-weather dish.  And winter vegetables are packed with skin-loving nutrients — pumpkin is a great source of anti-oxidants like alpha-catotene, an anti-aging nutrient for great skin health.

Avoid Alcohol. Between holiday parties, sometimes it’s tempting to reach for a glass of wine or beer at the end of a cold winter day.  But alcohol dehydrates you, interferes with sleep, and take a toll on your immune system.  Instead of reaching for an alcoholic beverage, consider relaxing with a cup of hot tea or mulled cider.  Your skin will be healthier and more radiant if you do!

What’s your favorite trick for beating the cold weather blues?
