My pre-baby To Do List is getting dangerously short.
The nursery will be finished today. (!!!)
The baby monitor is in place, his clothes are hung, and everything is put away.
My thank you notes are written, our taxes are filed, and every major purchase has been completed.
Our freezer is stocked with double batches of easy recipes, so Chad does not starve when I stop cooking for two or three weeks.
(There will also be lots of take-out involved.)
My hospital bag is packed, at least to the extent that it can be, given that I will inevitably need my camera and makeup and cell phone charger between now and April.
And yesterday, after work, I managed to have time to pick up a bunch of fresh flowers and paint my nails. (The pink shade is OPI from a fashion week gift bag, and the sparkly shade is Butter London ‘Anorak.’)
I am almost (almost) ready for this baby to arrive.
Honestly, sometimes on Saturday mornings, it’s like inspiration hits me. This weekend was no exception — I woke up and thought about our options for breakfast (bagels, oatmeal, going out), and one jumped out. Like, one of them blew all the others away, hands down, no question.
Because really, when homemade blueberry pancakes jump into your brain, there isn’t much room left for bagels.
Pancakes are actually surprisingly tricky to make, especially with a really substantial filling, but my big advice is to worry more about your pan than about the ingredients or even the temperature. I made three pancakes on a terrible stainless steel saute pan before realizing that I was better off with my workhorse nonstick skillet — and voila! Perfect pancakes.
As an unrelated side note, I had a funny moment that emphasized what a true Texan I’ve become. I’m heading to New York on Sunday for Mark’s 10 Year Anniversary part (I can’t wait), and when I checked the weather, it said that New York was at 77 degress. My immediate, gut reaction? That is freezing cold! But I’ll enjoy breaking out my jean jacket and escaping the 100+ degree heat for a few days!
Homemade Blueberry Pancakes
1 1/4 cups white whole wheat flour (it mostly behaves like white flour, but has the whole wheat healthiness!)
1/2 tsp salt
1 tbsp baking powder
1 tbsp sugar
1 cup milk
1 tbsp butter, melted
1/2 cup fresh blueberries
In a large bowl, sift together flour, salt, baking powder and sugar. Beat in the egg, butter and milk. Fold in the blueberries and set aside for 20 minutes.
Heat a lightly oiled skillet or griddle over medium heat. Pour the batter onto the skillet, using approximately 1/4 cup for each pancake. Brown on both sides and serve warm, with butter and maple syrup.
Recently, a number of you guys have written me about my Instagram account! To be honest, I’ve always thought of it as a side-show to my blog, but I’ve been so excited recently to see how many of you guys have found me through Instagram and then got excited about this site!
My Instagram account photos are so much more immediate than the photos I post here — they tend to be spur-of-the-moment shots, sometimes a week or two before the polished images make their way online! I’m excited to share more of my everyday life with you guys, and I thought one of the fun ways to do it is through Instagram — I hope you guys enjoy my photos!

I love the idea of “moody florals” as a trend — think those black, maroon and green floral dresses you’ve seen, but when I’m shopping, I still always gravitate towards the bold, bright shades. It’s funny to think that only a few years ago, jeans were blue and maybe black, and nothing else. It’s even crazier to think that a few years before that, jeans so unflattering that we now refer to them as “mom jeans,” which my mother wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole.
But jeans have come a long way from humble origins, and this pair is my new favorite! Bold splashes of color, a completely unique print, and flattering to boot? Love.
You guys probably remember almost this same outfit, which I styled for the cold for NYFW here — but I wanted you to see how I’d wear it for Spring as well! Replace the leather jacket with a tank, lose the hat, and strap on some platform sandals, and you’re totally prepared for those up-and-down spring temperatures.
7 For All Mankind jeans, Celine bag, By Boe necklaces (available here and here), Jimmy Choo Abel pumps.
I was seventeen years old the last time that I lived in an actual house.
Not an apartment, not a dorm, a real house with a garage and attic and guest bedrooms and a living and dining room that were not the same thing.
It’s a little weird. It somehow feels very grown up to have a mortgage and a house — but I am slowly getting used to it. I’m so excited for all the decorating and little updates we’ll be doing (hello, closet chandelier, where have you been all my life?!), I can’t wait for Calvin and Coco to explore our backyard, and I feel so lucky and grateful to have found a place we’ll stay for the next decade (or two).
How crazy is that?
