giveaway: the color of style

April 18th, 2010 · Print Print

When I was approached to do a giveaway of a style book, I was pretty excited.  I’ve read dozens (many, many dozens) of cookbooks, but as far as style goes, my reading doesn’t go much further than each month’s issue of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar.  So when Penguin sent me this book, written by Emmy award winning costume designer David Zyla, it was a welcome addition to my shelf.

Zyla’s premise is that we have versions of colors that are unique for each of us, based on our skin tones, eye color and hair color.  To me, that sounds like pretty good advice — how many times have you noticed that certain colors bring out your eyes?  That certain colors wash out your skin?  I know it’s something I always keep in mind when I’m choosing outfits for special occasions, and I love that this book provides a framework for knowing which colors are best.

One lucky reader will win a copy of this book!  To enter, leave a comment on this post by midnight EST on Thursday, April 22rd — and tell me what color you think is most flattering when you wear it!  I’ll be selecting a winner randomly and will announce it on Friday the 23rd.  Good luck!

And if you don’t want to wait for the giveaway, you can buy the book here!

Looks like I’m the first to comment!  That seems like a fantastic book as we can all use more style.  I subscribe by rss to your blog.

I have been surprised at how great a colour teal can be for me. I have decided it will be my main colour this spring! This sounds like a really interesting book. What have you learned from it?

  • 3 zoe // Apr 18, 2010 at 6:11 am

This book sounds fantastic! I am kind of obsessed with blue or purple. I think it is a rich color and brings out my eyes. ;)

  • 4 julie // Apr 18, 2010 at 6:49 am

I wear blue all the time, I like the way it looks

  • 5 VeggieGirl // Apr 18, 2010 at 7:09 am

The color that is most flattering on me is red – it brings out my eyes and actually compliments my porcelain skin.

  • 6 Laura H // Apr 18, 2010 at 7:18 am

This sounds like a good reference book!
I have been told that bold shades of deep red look good on me because of my darker hair and my light eyes. Somehow the red brings out the best in my features. :)

  • 7 Bindu // Apr 18, 2010 at 7:22 am

The most flattering color for me is any of the darker purples. I’m darker complexioned and have black hair so purple seems to work for me.

  • 8 Lydia D. // Apr 18, 2010 at 7:22 am

I have always thought that I looked best in fuschia and bright pink colors. I would love to check out this book and see what it has to say!

  • 9 Carol C // Apr 18, 2010 at 8:00 am

My personal favorite is Periwinkle, while the intensity of TEAL, Purple, Blue are magnets for me. I’m exploring goldenrod, greens- especially apple-green, and headed for sunshine and outdoors this summer. You’ve got me psyched to read the book!

  • 10 Farah // Apr 18, 2010 at 8:01 am

Bold or pastel shades of Pink because they’re girly, feminine and playful.  xx

  • 11 Meagan // Apr 18, 2010 at 8:07 am

I think red looks best on me, particularly the deeper shades of red. Also, I love this site! I have even tried a couple of the recipes, and they were delicious!

  • 12 Nirvana // Apr 18, 2010 at 8:09 am

I think black flatters absolutely everyone – it’s so elegant!

  • 13 Gabby / Gypsy*Diaries // Apr 18, 2010 at 8:21 am

What a great giveaway! I think navy looks the best on me, it brings out the green in my eyes and goes perfect with my blonde hair! :D

  • 14 Alexandra // Apr 18, 2010 at 9:00 am

I’m Alex! I think I look great in bright colors! It’s weird but I always get the most complements when I wear my bright yellow or bright blue sundresses. I think they make my skin look a little more glowy and my eyes pop :)

  • 15 Larie // Apr 18, 2010 at 9:35 am

That book looks intriguing!  I have recently decided that I need more basic royal blue in my life – it’s such a fun color!

  • 16 Sallie // Apr 18, 2010 at 10:43 am

Definitely white. Makes me look tan!

  • 17 Wendy // Apr 18, 2010 at 11:25 am

Thanks for sharing. I think red is the most flattering colour for me.

  • 18 Kristen // Apr 18, 2010 at 11:57 am

I think aqua blue plays nicely with my hair/eyes/skin tone.  But you tell me, what do you think?

  • 19 margaret // Apr 18, 2010 at 1:50 pm

I could be way off (which is why I need this book!) but I think red is great for my skin and hair.  Not sure about my eyes though.

  • 20 amy // Apr 18, 2010 at 2:14 pm

I’ve always loved teal, and not only does it bring out my eyes but it looks striking against my lighter skin and my (newly-red) hair. I like wearing all kinds of colors though.

  • 21 Sara // Apr 18, 2010 at 2:37 pm

Purple! I have blonde hair and grey-sorta-green eyes, and when I wear deep, royal purple it makes my eyes look really green! And its such a happy color :) Its my go-to when I have a special occasion, or if I need a lift during the day.

  • 22 Samantha // Apr 18, 2010 at 4:57 pm

i think i look good in purple, it’s a pretty cool color. I know i look terrible in yellow, it makes my skin look blotchy!

  • 23 Cristina // Apr 18, 2010 at 5:01 pm

I am partial to black and white- simple!

  • 24 Samantha // Apr 18, 2010 at 5:02 pm

I think I look best in green, I”m not sure why but hopefully, If I win the book, I’ll figure it out

  • 25 Bethany Davis // Apr 18, 2010 at 5:02 pm

I am one of those fortunate people who can wear just about any color (OK, so not pale yellow) really well, particularly bright or deep ones.  Though, if I had to pick just one…maybe two, I would say that purple and green are my best friends.

  • 26 Lisa // Apr 18, 2010 at 5:14 pm

wow. this looks like an awesome book.  randomly, watermelon is a really great color on me.  i love wearing purple as well.

  • 27 Kelly // Apr 18, 2010 at 6:32 pm

Green cause I have olive skin!

  • 28 lindsay // Apr 18, 2010 at 6:54 pm

i would have to say green. because i have red hair and green eyes. ;)

  • 29 Caitlin // Apr 18, 2010 at 6:54 pm

I love to wear teal and most shades of green. I have very unique green eyes and I love to find clothes that match them. Purple also helps to make my eyes “pop”!

  • 30 Chaya // Apr 18, 2010 at 7:02 pm

I have taken a major change in my favorite colors to wear, I used to be a blue fan but now I love the softer colors like pink and yellow.

  • 31 Chaya // Apr 18, 2010 at 7:04 pm

  • 32 Jenny // Apr 18, 2010 at 7:05 pm

I look really good in teal/turquoise. My eyes are hazel, but they always look blue when I wear that color :)

  • 33 Liz // Apr 18, 2010 at 7:51 pm

    Red….light skin and eyes….dark hair….

  • 34 Niki // Apr 19, 2010 at 4:20 am

Pinks usually look great on me b/c of my olive skin tone.  Or maybe I’m biased b/c it’s my fav color!!!

  • 35 Katie // Apr 19, 2010 at 6:06 am

Probably blue, b/c that’s what color my eyes are.  I sort of wish it was pink though, since that’s my favorite color!

  • 36 Jamie Lee // Apr 19, 2010 at 6:31 am

I think my most flattering color is FUSCIA. I think it goes well with my skin tone. :) Love Sugarlaws!

  • 37 Maddy // Apr 19, 2010 at 7:09 am

I could certainly use more color in my wardrobe.  I don’t use it often, but pretty much any shade is blue is flattering on me :)

  • 38 Hannah V. // Apr 19, 2010 at 7:31 am

I always gravitate toward olive greens.

  • 39 Nat // Apr 19, 2010 at 8:22 am

I love peacock green. I just got a dress in this color, and I looked fabulous. :D

  • 40 Michele B // Apr 19, 2010 at 9:10 am

I always get the most compliments in red, but blue really brings out my eyes. :)

  • 41 Lisa // Apr 19, 2010 at 9:13 am

I get compliments when I wear dark periwinkle blue. Apparently it’s very close to the color of my eyes.

  • 42 Mallory // Apr 19, 2010 at 10:41 am

green and blue. my eyes switch back and forth between those two colors and anything with either of those colors really makes my eyes pop.

  • 43 haley // Apr 19, 2010 at 11:45 am

I’ve been stuck in a bit of a black rut lately, but I love to wear bright blues and greens to make my eyes pop!

  • 44 Jessica R. // Apr 19, 2010 at 12:31 pm

Hmmm.  I actually think maybe green.  I think blondes look amazing in green.

  • 45 Zena // Apr 19, 2010 at 2:20 pm

My best friend constantly moans about the lack of variety in my dress colours; I always go for something neutral like biscuit or taupe…you can look fab without wearing something that’s screaming ‘look at me!’

  • 46 jen // Apr 19, 2010 at 2:25 pm

I think I look great in a lot of shades of blue :-)

  • 47 Alison // Apr 19, 2010 at 2:29 pm

That looks like a great book! Thanks for the opportunity. I think blues usually look better on me.

  • 48 Natalie // Apr 19, 2010 at 2:30 pm

I love all blues, especially cerulean!  I also think black is extremely flattering on everyone, and I wear it a lot.  I would LOVE this book!!!

  • 49 Natalie // Apr 19, 2010 at 2:51 pm

I have dark hair and dark eyes, so blue just makes it a bit too dark for me. I like going with pastel pink or yellow. :)

  • 50 sarakata // Apr 19, 2010 at 3:49 pm

I love black.  Sounds a little bit of emo, but I can’t help it, it’s my fave color! haha

  • 51 taylor // Apr 19, 2010 at 8:00 pm

I love wearing soft pink!! I wear it all the time! I love to wear all colors! The more color the better!

  • 52 Allie // Apr 19, 2010 at 11:18 pm

    Dark purple or green.

  • 53 Hannah // Apr 20, 2010 at 12:00 am

Jewel tones work well with my dark hair/eyes and light skin.  I’m getting back to being more adventurous with color in my wardrobe. It’s fun!

  • 54 Lynda@meandmypinkmixer // Apr 20, 2010 at 6:29 am

I’ve been wearing a lot of gray lately for some reason, but I get lots of compliments whenever I wear pink.  Maybe this book will help me get over this gray obsession I have!

  • 55 Cassie Lee Guerrera // Apr 20, 2010 at 9:20 am

I find that coral, yellow and teal look best on me.  I am Italian and Irish so I have a mainly olive skin tone, but I have red in my brown hair and these colors compliment them both without making me look jaundice!  What a spectacular give away.  Thanks for this incredible offer!

  • 56 Maja // Apr 20, 2010 at 10:02 am

Dark red and dark green. I have no idea, why, i just feel really good in those colours. And i know i look good in them, too. ;)

  • 57 sr2345 // Apr 20, 2010 at 12:44 pm

what a fun giveaway!!  i always love wearing pink :)

  • 58 Michelle @ Taste As You Go // Apr 20, 2010 at 1:38 pm

Lately I’ve been embracing the cooler colors — blues and purples — and have been moving away from pink (a favorite) and black (a must).

    Great giveaway!

  • 59 Kenya // Apr 20, 2010 at 2:13 pm

PINK PINK PINK! or blue occasionally. the book sounds fascinating!

  • 60 Alexandra // Apr 20, 2010 at 4:03 pm

  • 63 Renee // Apr 21, 2010 at 6:00 am

I’m pretty pale… and I just got over my fear of peach! The right shade can be awesome on fair skin.
And not only will this book be great for fashion advice… it will be great for helping me decorate my new apartment! I would love it!!

  • 64 Marissa // Apr 21, 2010 at 7:06 am

Reading your blog in the Heathrow airport in London with the volcanic ash crisis going on is keeping me sane! This book looks amazing. With olive skin, I look best in brights, either purple or red. Thank you!

  • 65 Kerry // Apr 21, 2010 at 9:10 am

Hmm…I would have to say that I look best in royal blue.
I LOVE your blog!  I just stumbled across it the other day and I am SO glad that I did!

  • 66 tina // Apr 21, 2010 at 3:11 pm

Brown is a comforting color to wear and works well with my dark hair, brown eyes, and medium to light complexion.  I feel good wearing brown.  When I prefer to be a bit more colorful and noticeable, red is definitely my friend.

  • 67 Paulina // Apr 21, 2010 at 5:39 pm

I love dark purples and dark blues. They are my friends. Lucky for me, they are also my favorite colors!

  • 68 ephrat // Apr 21, 2010 at 9:38 pm

earthy tones like browns and greens are always a safe bet.

  • 69 Willy // Apr 22, 2010 at 10:56 am

Hmm… I love color theories and this will be added to my list of books to read!

In my mind, I think a jewel toned, saturated purple is best on me in the winter. It distracts from my pale skin and brings out my green eyes. However, once I achieve my perfect sun-kissed tan, deep salmon is absolutely the most flattering color!

  • 70 Annie // Apr 22, 2010 at 12:29 pm

That sounds like an awesome book! In the winter, My most flattering color is a dark maroon. However, in the summer, my color is a light pink. I’ve been told I look good in light greens too.
