style: very special vintage

There is one type of vintage shopping that I am exceptionally good at: the kind that takes place inside my mother’s closet.
I went home for a friend’s baby shower (!) last weekend, and while I was there, I “borrowed” a number of phenomenal pieces from my mom’s closet to photograph for Sugarlaws. I always wonder how many of my pieces will stay stylish enough that my daughters may beg to borrow them someday — while it’s always tempting to buy whatever is trendiest now, there has to be some balance between stocking your closet with fun stuff for this season and key pieces that will last forever.
But I digress. Because this dress wasn’t trendy or a wardrobe staple — it is, actually, my mother’s wedding dress. I’ve looked at photos of her wearing it since I was a kid, and let me say, she was (is) absolutely beautiful. This dress was just like my mom — understated and casually elegant and thirty years later, still just as gorgeous.
I’m actually wearing the dress backwards — the ruffle in the front made me look a little too Anne-of-Green-Gables — and I’ve paired it with a vintage leather belt. The brown leather belt and my black patent shoes are not a great match, but unfortunately, my mom is two sizes bigger than me in footwear, so there’s a limit on what I can borrow.
And, what you’ve all been waiting for: the winner of the T.J. Maxx and Marshalls giveaway is Brooke, comment #74! I’ll be emailing later today for your address!
