tutorial: purple smokey eyes

I’ve been a little obsessed with purple for the past few months.  Maybe it was Natalie Portman’s Oscars look [1] that kicked it off — or maybe it was just bound to happen, given that purple is such an easy, flattering color to wear.

And that applies to makeup too!  Purple eyeshadow isn’t like blue — it’s so much more neutral, and doesn’t give that 80’s vibe that most colored shadows do.  It’s almost more like a brown or grey, except even more universally pretty.  Take basically any eye color and skin tone, and this makeup still looks great.

As smokey eyes go, this is pretty basic — just a touch of a lighter lilac in the inner corner of the eye, a rich purple all over the lid and in the crease, and a little glitter to highlight the brow bone.  I really briefly defined my brows, added two coats of mascara, and that’s it!  You’re ready for anything, day or night, summer or winter.

I used Bobbi Brown Crystal Eye Palette [2], gifted COVERGIRL LiquilineBlast in Violet Voltage [3], gifted Urban Decay Eyeshadow primer [4], DIORSHOW Mascara [5], and a Bobbi Brown Brow Kit that seems to have been discontinued.
