tutorial: vintage pin-up makeup

July 7th, 2011 · Print Print

A few weeks ago, I asked on Twitter what hair and makeup tutorials you guys would like to see, and I got an awesome suggestion from Susie to do a Vintage Pin-Up Girl makeup look!

From that moment on, I couldn’t get this look out of my head.  In part because it’s so different from my usual makeup, and in part because because it just sounded so dramatic and fun!

I originally thought of this as kind of a Katy Perry-inspired look, but with my new hair in loose curls, I thought it came out more like Veronica Lake.  I keep forgetting that I’m blonde now!  But if you’re looking for a little bit of old Hollywood glamour, this is a terrific one to try.

You could totally tone down this look a notch by eliminating the fake eyelashes, but for this video, I wanted to go all out.  Hope you guys like it!

I used: Kat Von D Tattoo liner, MakeUp Forever Carolyn false lashes, an old Sephora palette with a neutral shadow, discontinued Bobbi Brown brow kit, MAC powder blush, L’Oreal lip liner in Always Red, Neutrogena lipstick in Poppy Red, Bobbi Brown Crystal lip gloss and MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Porcelain Pink.

The dress is so old it’s almost vintage itself — it’s ABS, and I think I got it for a formal dance my sophomore year of college!

Love the look! Couldn’t watch the video though bc it says it’s private? I am a new reader of your blog, but I am definitely hooked :)

Great look – but like Michelle, I also can’t watch the video because it is private! Just a heads up. :)

I love the pinup look! It always screams feminine to me–not soft-feminine, but super vampy WOMAN feminine :-* Love it!

DYING!  You look incredible, I can’t get over it.  You sort of look like Sarah Michelle Gellar from her “Buffy” days in the first photo!

Rachel — OMG, Sarah Michelle Gellar was my high school/college IDOL.  Love her.  Amazingly, you’re not the first to tell me I look like her — SO amazing! :-)

Wait — maybe I should do a Buffy tutorial?!  It’s a little dated, but could still be really fun!

Love that idea!  I found this pic, I think she’s your twin —

We totally have the same taste in TV shows too btw. I adore Buffy and SMG.  PS I still need to get FNL from you too!

Yes — come anytime!  I’m around this weekend if that works!

PS — Do you watch Party Down?  If not, you HAVE TO.  It’s cancelled now, but available on Netflix, and that show was so cult amazing — no one knew about it when it was on!

I enjoyed watching the tutorial…I am bad at applying liquid liner hands tend to be shakey.. ;D But the make up turned out to be fabulous! Will try this for a girls night out!

Whoa, how did I miss you coloring your hair, you look like a different gal! You look HOT, fabulous, chic, and sultry.  I’m a huge fan of the pin-up look and red lipstick.  P.s what color is that lipstick?

Elle — It’s Neutrogena MoistureShine in Poppy Red!  Same one as this post, actually: I’d totally forgotten I even owned it!

Wow! Can u get any prettier? This was really fun. I never seem to apply lashes & get them to stick. My eyeliner always smudges so Im gonna try that trick with the shadow. I love ur big eyes, & the lashes just opened them up more. I have an urge to try this as well, altered of course for my skin tone. Thanks for the ideas and tips. Ur always a lot of help.
