September 24th, 2010 · Print Print

Walking home from work a few days ago, I started thinking about the fact that I’m at one of the few stages of life for which September doesn’t mean “back to school.”  There’s this minuscule period between being a kid and having your own kids — and while September still means shorter days and cooler nights, it doesn’t mean textbooks and teachers anymore.  Part of me was a little sad, this September, to miss out on that brand-new-year feeling!

Um, Katy, what does this have to do with that box of chocolate goodies I’m staring at?  Ok, well, first of all, I’m half apologizing — this was supposed to be a back to school giveaway and I kind of dropped the ball.  The reader package has been sitting in my apartment begging to be sent out since before Fashion Week, and I’m only just getting around to posting about it.

Second, this package from Nestle contained these totally adorable Mommy-sized and kid-sized aprons, and I couldn’t help but think about how cute it would be to have a little school-aged munchkin to put into the mini one.  Fortunately, I have a little semi-munchkin of my own:

Isn’t he a cutie pie?  Now onto more important matters — like how to win this package!  And what’s in it!

One lucky winner will receive the same package I received (don’t worry, a fresh, pristine one — my dog won’t have worn the apron you’re getting), which includes two cartons of Nestle mini-chocolate chip ice cream toppers, six coupons for free packages of Nestle chocolate chips and Tollhouse cookie dough, Mom- and kid-sized aprons, recipe cards, and other goodies from Nestle!

You can enter in two ways!

  • Leave a comment on this post, professing your undying love of chocolate chips, or
  • Follow @sugarlaws on Twitter, and tweet the following: Win a package of Nestle chocolate from @sugarlaws!  Click here:

I’ll announce a randomly selected winner on Wednesday, September 29th!  Good luck!

I love chocolate.  And I think it would be funny to see my cat in that apron.  Haha. If I could get it on her…

  • 3 dori // Sep 24, 2010 at 5:58 am

Not only has my daughter started asking for cookies for dinner, but she just got a play kitchen for her birthday, so the apron will come in handy! She can bake cookies for everyone!

  • 4 Pamela M // Sep 24, 2010 at 6:23 am

Those Nestle Tollhouse chocolate chip cookie dough tubes were what first got me into baking when I was 12.  Little did I know what an obsession that would turn out to be!  :) Chocolate chip cookies are still my favorite thing to bake after all this time, though I now make them from scratch.

Next to Diet Coke, chocolate is my next biggest addiction :) Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars were one of the first things I learned how to make as a kid and I still love them!

  • 13 Katherine // Sep 24, 2010 at 7:12 am

This could be my favorite giveaway thus far. I love, love, love, love chocolate. Obviously. My little munchkin won’t need an apron for a while, but we’re going to get him/her started cooking and baking as soon as possible! By then the chocolate from the giveaway will be gone, but we can make more goodies in the future. Yum!

As a school teacher, I always get wistfull when school starts, and not for the reason you’re thinking. I adore my two children and our summer days are filled with berry picking, making jam, and baking. I’m always a little sad that another year has past and that next year they may be too big to “hang with mom” (they’re 11 and 9). My son and daughter’s FAVORITE thing to do is bake cookies on a Friday night to be eaten for breakfast Saturday. It helps me extend that summer bonding a little longer. I know…great mom…but nutritionally they are not much worse than sugary cereal. My little girl would look adorable in the apron, and I promise I’ll take pictures to share.

  • 20 Pete // Sep 24, 2010 at 8:59 am

I won’t use any other chips besides Nestles when I’m baking!

  • 21 Annabelle // Sep 24, 2010 at 9:35 am

It would make more sense to have a contest saying tell us why you don’t like Nestles chocolate.
Zero comments…..  So, count me as another lover of chocolate.

Ooh! Ooh! Pick me! Chocolate chips are the reason I can’t lose the 6.3928 pounds I’m constantly trying to get rid of. No lie. :) They end up in my pancakes at least once a week and on top of my ice cream more times than that.

If chosen, I promise to use said chocolate chips for good instead of evil… and I’ll probably force my husband to dress up in the apron every time I bake. :)

  • 31 shenais // Sep 24, 2010 at 11:39 am

    chocolate chips
i must mix them into cookie dough QUICK
before they end up being pop pop popped
    into my mouth.
    thank you!

Dip a spoon in peanut butter jar, then submerge in bag of chocolate chips. So delicious! I love chocolate chips…in fact, I’m heading for some now…

  • 33 Maureen // Sep 24, 2010 at 12:12 pm

My husband and I must have at least 7 bags of chips in the house. We feel we have none even when there are two bags left in the pantry. We use the Nestle chips so often to bake and well even when we have just a chocolate craving.

  • 34 The Baking Connoisseur // Sep 24, 2010 at 12:16 pm

How can someone NOT love chocolate chips?! Great giveaway!

  • 35 trang // Sep 24, 2010 at 12:54 pm

One of my most favoriting things about fall, aside from pumpkin is the warm baked chocolate chip cookies and a good cup of godiva hot cocoa.  It is absolutely delish.

  • 36 Sarah // Sep 24, 2010 at 12:59 pm

My family has a chocolate chip LEGACY! When I was younger, my dad had this plastic peanut jar (it’s square) that somehow lost it’s lid, so he replaced it with a blue lid from one of those gigantic jars of Hellman’s mayo.

Every Sunday on his visitation days, he’d make me and my brother chocolate chip pancakes. To this day, I can’t eat pancakes any other way. I’d stand by the stove and help him put the chips in the pancakes, and he’d let me reach my little hand in the plastic jar and eat a few, and we’d sit there making pancakes and eating the chocolate chips. (We would even make MAYDAY MAYDAY noises when we missed the pancake and the chip fell onto the stove. One time, he even sang TAPS for it… so sad.)

ANYWAY, around the same time I left for college, his girlfriend moved in (and with it rearranged the entire kitchen), and I snagged the legendary plastic jar of chocolate chips (long since used- the chips inside were kinda nasty). I cleaned it out and claimed it as my own. Five years later, I moved back in the house (pesky student loans!).

Last week, I was making these divine chocolate chip cookies (with 1/3rd white chips, 2/3rds chocolate chips pecans and oatmeal flour), and he saw the plastic container on my stove. He bellowed, “YOU STOLE THIS?!?!” to which I smiled and said yes. He nodded, reached in the jar, grabbed some chips and ate them, and continued on his way without another word.

Chocolate chips are a a staple in our house! Since I married my husband 7 years ago, I have made him chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast at least 5 days a week!  If that isn’t love (of choc. chips AND my husband), I don’t know what is :)

Chocolate chips make me think of my boyfriend. We’ve been together for over two years.  Like any relationship, we have our inside jokes, our own rituals, and our own memories — and I would have to say that making cookies and anything with chocolate chips together is one of the things that sticks out the most in my mind. While most college kids spend their nights eating cafeteria food and drinking beer from a frat cup, my boyfriend and I spent a lot of our time cooking.

He’s the only guy I have ever met that loves cooking, baking, and playing around in the kitchen. Early on in our relationship, I filled a jar of chocolate chips for him — and we spent the next months making everything from chocolate chip waffles to chocolate chip muffins. However, whenever we were too tired or busy to make something from scratch, we always relied on Tollhouse cookies from the local grocery store.

Looking back, our senior year was spent making cookies — in between law school applications and graduation plans. If we weren’t making the chocolate chip chocolate filled cookies, we were indulging on the peanut butter chocolate chip kind. It was a love affair — us two (in love with each other) in love with the cookies.

And I can’t tell you how much I miss all that right now. Currently, I’m living in California working as a Hollywood red carpet reporter and studying for the LSAT, and he is living in St. Louis attending law school at Washington University. We’re doing the long-distance thing, and of course, it’s incredibly difficult being apart.

No matter how sugary sweet it may sound, whenever I smell fresh cookies baking — I can’t help but think of him, and I know he can’t help but think of me.
