Did you guys know that I was a cheerleader in college?  I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned it on this blog before, but when a friend dug up these amazing photos and posted them to Facebook, I couldn’t help but share.  I usually try to hold back from posting pictures that aren’t fashion- or food-related, but sometimes I think I go a little overboard with the restraint.  You guys don’t mind a few photos of me growing up, or of Calvin and Coco, every now and then, right?

Cheerleading was, in a lot of ways, a crazy idea.  Before college, I’d gone to prep school in Connecticut, to the kind of school that was far too progressive for something like cheerleading.  But I’d grown up watching Saved By The Bell obsessively, and even as I was nearing college, there was honestly nothing I wanted more than to be a cheerleader.

So, I tried out.  And tryouts were really, really hard — about three quarters of the girls who came to the first day didn’t show up the second day. But I stuck it out, and to my shock, I made it!  It probably didn’t hurt that I was teeny tiny and willing to let people throw me into the air — and that I’d figure skated for almost a decade, so I had the balance and flexibility that were crucial for stunting.

And we had so much fun.  Like any athlete (because I still firmly believe that cheerleaders are athletes), there were trade-offs and rewards — I got to go to the first round of NCAAs in New Orleans, which was so incredibly fun, and we were even on ESPN one year.  On the other hand, getting up at 9:30 am for Saturday morning football games (especially in November, when it’s freezing out) was sometimes a little rough.  But now I wouldn’t trade those memories for anything — even if it does feel like they were a very long time ago!

Because you guys probably can’t even recognize me (I was eighteen in some of these!), I’m on the top left side of the first, third and fourth photos, and second from the left in the second photo.  So fun!

Wow how fun!!! You look sooo young!!! I was asked to be a cheerleader when I started college, I didn’t though XD
(sadly I have a prejudice against most cheerleaders because I was a gymnast…haha…)

How fun!!!  I, too, cheered in college and it was SO MUCH FUN!  I cheered for an NAIA school, and our basketball teams were amazing – we won two national championships while I was cheering.  I love the photos!

    Too adorable…

I’m an unabashed feminist and was a cheerleader in high school. Loved it.

I’m so jealous! My school didn’t have cheerleaders but I always wanted to be one.

Aww fun! I was a varsity cheerleader all throughout high school (including senior captain!) but in college I chose to focus on theatre instead of straining myself to make my university’s D-1 team…every time I go to a football game I really miss it though!

I Love it! Good for you for sticking it out and making the team. College cheering? Awesome. ESPN? Very awesome. Thanks for posting this!

Try outs are harder than people expect…. I never made it to the one in college, but I had fun being a cheerleader in Junior high though….

We have shared that we have this in common already…although I am 5’7 and 130 pounds, so I was never at the top of the pyramid lol…and in the NFL it is really more about dancing than cheering anyway.
I know college cheerleading is SERIOUS dedication…look how adorable and TINY you were/are!  Thanks for sharing your old school photos…I love seeing into more of your life…we are all a product of our past experiences as they say!
    Happy Weekend.

I wish I would have kept cheering in college. My high school cheerleading days were some of the best times in my life.

And my love of cheerleading also came from watching too much Saved by the Bell as a kid!

That is so awesome! I always wanted to be a cheerleader ever since I started gymnastics but my university doesn’t have any. The training is very difficult, people seriously underestimate it.

So… you were a flier! I am a former cheerleader mom and a cheerleader sponsor and a cheerleader aunt and a cheerleader daughter. Yes… they are athletes; especially these days! My daughter also figure- skated…in Texas! With ( for interesting trivia) the daughter of Chuck Norris!
