Sugarlaws: Living Sweetly.

tutorial: kate middleton’s shiny waves

So, I will be the first to say: I am not even remotely sick of the Royal Wedding yet.

In fact, I’m one of those people who cannot seem to get enough of it — every photo slideshow of Kate Middleton’s coats or her hats, every article that says the same thing as all the other articles, basically every single passing reference to this event, and I’m enthralled.

Obviously, it’s so fun to see a girl become a princess right in front of our eyes, but one of the things I like best about this particular wedding is that William and Kate seem like such a stable, happy couple.  I’m excited for the fashion and all the craziness of the event (and gosh, she is so darn pretty), but I’m also just happy for these two, seemingly very nice people — I think, in some ways, that’s what I like best about all the wedding frenzy.

And if you guys are as crazy with excitement as I am (I’m seriously considering waking up at 6 a.m. on Friday), I thought I’d do a fun Kate Middleton-inspired tutorial for Sugarlaws!  There’s nothing more distinctive about Kate than her gorgeous, shiny, wavy hair, so that’s what I recreate in this video.

It’s easier than you think — blow dry it out for lots of volume and then use a 1 1/2″ curling iron, spray the waves and comb them out with your fingers.

No Royal Hairdresser required.

Katy, I’m sure you’ve heard this before but you actually look a lot like her. Especially with your hair like that!

By the way I am for sure trying to do my hair like this tomorrow! I’m always looking for new ways to curl my hair so this is great!

I love how your cute puppy kept walking back and forth behind you! It added to the adorable factor by at least 10.

Sarah — I may have heard it before, but I don’t exactly get tired of hearing that! :-)

Erin — I know, she likes to stay close!  It was raining out and the poor thing was terrified, but she was pretty good!

I love this tutorial.  My hair doesn’t do anything because its so thick.  Drives me crazy

You actually remind me a little bit of her. I guess that means well done with the hair! :)

You do look just as gorgeous as Kate!

I’m happy for William and Kate, but I honestly can’t take it anymore. Also because she lost weight to confine to some image before the wedding. It’s disappointing to see someone so in the limelight fall to pressure like that.

Ugh, I know, the weight thing was so annoying.  I think most brides want to lose a little weight before the big day (I didn’t try to, but I was pretty happy how I was).  You’d think Kate would realize how gorgeous she is and not ruin it trying to get skinnier!

And thank you Krista and Belly!!!

Love the waves katy, which reminds me, my hair is in dire need of shaping, I only wear it up now…

You really do look a lot like her! Wonderful video… is that your natural hair color? I tried a chestnut brown hair color (I’m naturally lighter) and it came out too red! Just curious if you have a faux color secret :)

It’s natural — I used to dye my hair a lot but eventually I grew out my roots and dyed it all back to my natural color.  I had that part done at Salon AKS if that helps!

I’ve actually been thinking about going a little lighter for summer — what do you think?!?

Katy, I love this video! You look absolutely gorgeous.

So cute.  Hi Coco!  I just watched video in the library with no sound.  I looked totally insane hahaha.  But, I miss my sister, what can I say!  Katy, I kind of want to go lighter too…but after all of those years of high-lighting I don’t think I have it in me.  I think you should go with auburn highlights rather than blond.  Also as Craig (now at Warren Tricomi) who to see.  I have a haircut the first Saturday I am back in NYC, so come with me!!!!

Nice one! I have the straightest hair, and stubborn too. Maybe it’s an Asian thing, but waves are outta the question for me. Doesn’t mean I can;’t appreciate a great tutorial though!

Hi there! I was really looking forward to this tutorial but I think you cut out the most important parts. I would have liked to see you curl most of your hair.

  • 17 Katy // May 2, 2011 at 9:44 am

Brenda — That’s helpful for me!  I didn’t include it because I thought it would draw out the video unnecessarily, but that totally makes sense.  I’m still new at this, so I definitely appreciate the feedback!

  • 18 Brenda // May 2, 2011 at 5:02 pm

I’m glad you appreciated the feedback. I love your videos! I was also wondering if you put any products in your hair before you blow dry?

  • 19 Katy // May 2, 2011 at 5:08 pm

Just detangler (leave-in conditioner) sometimes: http://www.amazon.com/Pantene-Medium-Thick-Solutions-Silkening-Detangler/dp/B003USM6TW

Every once in a while I use Rusk heat protective spray, but really rarely!  I think so long as you do a deep conditioner every few weeks, that’s enough.

PS — I think I’m going to buy the upgrade to iMovie so that I can show clips on fast forward — that way you guys won’t have to watch me curl my hair for ten minutes but you can see how I do the whole look!

You say “um” and “uh” way too much.

  • 22 katy // May 31, 2011 at 2:56 pm

LOL — I know, I’m working on it!

Thanks for this – I love Kate Middleton! :) I’m going to try this this weekend, her hair is always so pretty.

[...] And Caroline did an amazing job — she didn’t even bat an eye when I showed her my shaggy six-months-without-a-trim layers. She only took off about an inch of my hair, but how much better does it look? We recreated these Kate Middleton-inspired waves using a larger barrel curling iron and a tiny bit of backcombing on the crown of my head — I want to find a way to add that detail to my Kate Middleton hair tutorial! Hi Katy!  I just stumbled across your site, and I gotta say, I think you are wonderful!  You’re a joy to watch & read, so effervescent and friendly.  Thanks for ‘keeping it real’ for all of us!

I just went out and bought a 1 1/2 inch curling iron yesterday and tried this tutorial this morning.  It didn’t come out exactly like yours though.  Maybe my hair doesn’t take to curling as easily?

However, I did notice that when you were curling sections, you left the bottom inch or so of your hair out of the clamp.  Is this a trick I haven’t picked up before?  I’m thinking that maybe if I did that, more room would be freed up around the barrel for hair further up.  I’d love to hear some more of your thoughts on curling iron technique!

  • 26 katy // Sep 11, 2011 at 6:26 pm

Hey!  I always leave the ends out — you get a more natural look that way, instead of the slightly prom-hair curls you get when you leave them in!  I will say, my hair didn’t curl nearly as well when it was my natural color — damaged hair is so much easier to style!  But mousse really helps if you hair doesn’t curl as easily, and thinner sections of hair for each curl!

hey katy =).. I really love your hair, it looks pretty and natural. May I know what hairspray you use in this video? thx for sharing =D

  • 28 Katy // Dec 17, 2011 at 6:55 pm

I’s Rusk!  I think the hairspray is called w8less — it’s really good!
