a little bit of advice

August 21st, 2011

By this point in the summer, I’ve put a lot of thought into what I’m going to be wearing in a few weeks for New York Fashion Week.

I had some last-minute choices last season that turned out to be disasters (one of them I was so embarrassed about that I couldn’t even post it on here), so this season I want to have everything planned out beforehand.  I need clothes that are true to my personal style, but also take it up a notch — I sometimes gravitate towards “simple” that runs the risk of “boring,” and that’s no good either.

I spent this weekend pulling together some of my frontrunner outfits and photographing them — this was actually an outfit I wore to a meeting and liked it so much that I decided it was going into the NYFW lineup!  But it got me thinking… rather than show you guys what I wore after I wore it, I figured I’d post it before wearing it and get feedback from you guys!

So what do you think of this one?  Too many accessories? Is the hair style too casual?Β  The designers I’m wearing here run the gamut of Chanel (sunnies) to Payless (heels), and that mixing of high and low is one of the things I’m most proud of in my personal style.

So let me know what you guys think!Β  I need about 8-10 outfits for seven days of shows, events and afterparties throughout the week, so if you guys don’t mind, I’m probably going to be asking for your advice on a bunch of these!

Zara blouse and skirt, gifted Silvia Tcherassi for Payless heels, Topshop necklace, DANNIJO earrings and bracelet, Alexis Bittar bracelet, gifted Chanel sunglasses (via Lenscrafters), gifted Ralston handbag.

This looks fabulous! The only thing I would do is maybe switch out the white skirt since FW is after Labor Day? But maybe that’s just the southern style coming out in me πŸ™‚ Either way, you look gorge and those shoes are amazing!

I am gobsmacked that those heels are from Payless! Fab for sure. And I love the pairing with the rich saphire blouse. The outfit is a keeper.

Michelle — I know what you mean!  But I worry this gets too casual when I pair it with denim…  BUT, on the other hand, I have a white jeans look too, so I’m worried with both of them it’s too much September white!

Lauren — I KNOW!  Their designer collaborations are actually pretty awesome.  I also have these Christian Siriano sandals that I wear ALL THE TIME and they’re $22!!  http://www.payless.com/store/product/detail.jsp;jsessionid=ADC8F2B1CCE80361ECD1D177BA56B47B.pss-app-03-app1?catId=cat10376&subCatId=&skuId=086630070&productId=69835&lotId=086630&category=&catdisplayName=Brands

I love everything…but the skirt. It just looks to light with the rest of the look.

I’m so glad I posted this — you guys are so helpful!  Do you think if I swapped the skirt for white jeans (or blue skinny jeans), would that be better?

  • 6 Michelle // Aug 21, 2011 at 9:24 pm

Do you have a black skirt you could wear? Either way it looks great, but maybe that would help with the white πŸ™‚ Skinny jeans or skinny black pants would look great too!

  • 7 Rene // Aug 21, 2011 at 9:26 pm

I think the blue skinny jeans would make everything too BLUE. White skinny jeans would be pretty, but I do like the skirt.

The more I look at the hair, the more I like it πŸ™‚

love love love the whole outfit. Especially the heels. The only thing that I wasn’t a fan of was the earrings. With the necklace being so amazing, maybe make the earrings a little simpler. Otherwise, I love the outfit, white skirt, shoes, the bag, the hair, the top – all of it!

looking good! like the above few comments, i’m not completely sure about the skirt – rather than jeans, you could wear a mustard colour skirt? that would go really well with the blue, plus the pink necklace?

Do you have black leather shorts? Not everyone could pull them off, but I think you could!

    Love your hair like that!

Ooh . . .or maybe some brown leather shorts?  I think they would look amazing on you!

  • 13 VeggieGirl // Aug 22, 2011 at 10:10 am

    BRILLIANT shoes!

  • 14 Katherine // Aug 22, 2011 at 10:10 am

unlike everyone else, I like the skirt! It might be my favorite part of the outfit. I say white works as long as it’s warm out.

  • 15 Katy // Aug 22, 2011 at 10:14 am

I like the leather shorts idea!  But I don’t have a pair — any suggestions on where I could find good ones (preferably under $200)??

This outfit is a TRAIN WRECK from head to toe!!  Please reconsider wearing this to a function centered around fashion.

  • 17 Danita R Cozart // Aug 22, 2011 at 10:56 am

I love the skirt and shoes (nice legs). But I may rethink the shirt. I thought it was maybe too big for the overall look.

  • 18 Tiffany // Aug 22, 2011 at 10:59 am

I’m really not in love with it. There’s just too much going on between the earrings and the necklace and the braid. But that’s just my opinion.

I do love the shoes w/ the loose blue shirt, but I’d go for a pair of white skinnies over the white skirt. The skirt isn’t doing the shirt any favors.

I think that the combination of colors that stems from the heels is really different and cool!  It’s awesome that you take risks with your fashion and there’s no better time to do it than during NYFW!

  • 20 Sarah H // Aug 22, 2011 at 11:22 am

Adorable! I’d probably switch the skirt for something darker because the white skirt looks pretty casual (I’m not sure how formal Fashion Week is in NY… I’ve never been!)

This outfit would also be really cute with these jeans in green or red… http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/j-brand-skinny-stretch-twill-pants/3218969?origin=keywordsearch&resultback=591

Or black skinny jeans would also be cute, and a little more formal.

But I love everything else about the outfit – especially the shoes! You look like a super model in everything you wear – so I’m sure whatever you end up wearing will look awesome!

I love the hair and necklace, I might switch the skirt for dressy white skinny pants or something capri length, just to have something more form fitting for the bottom half

  • 22 Ree // Aug 23, 2011 at 12:12 am

There’s too much volume – top AND bottom.

Skirt is too ‘summer barbeque.’ If you’re keen to wear white, team it with white jeans & roll/ flip/ fold the cuff up (only 1/2 in MAX) so they finish at your ankle. Is the top longish? Black tights would look rad (blue and black will be big in the coming winter), but will require a shoe swap.

The bag is too dark for the outfit – I also think its too big (big top, big skirt, big bag), but I’m assuming it needs to be big so you can fit all your bits and pieces in it, but do you have one that’s not black (and not snakeskin brahmin)? Tan/ Brown? Could you use a smaller bag?

Necklace needs to go – billowy top & long necklace don’t work.

Bangles need to not be black. Earrings need to not be blue. Try gold or copper accessories, they’ll brighten the outfit. Not silver, especially if you wear white pants.

Love the plait, but your hair is too fluffy/ frizzy. A sleek pony or top knot would also look good – add some height and give some balance by reducing the volume.

Also – I get what you’re doing with the billowy top, but it’s a lot of fabric for a small frame.

Those shoes are to die for!! I like this outfit but would actually remove the earrings. I think its a bit matchy with the blue top, and I think the necklace makes enough of a pop of color on its own.

  • 24 Sidra // Aug 23, 2011 at 5:08 pm

Hiya, Katie this outfit is totally cute, except maybe lose the earrings and the bracelet. The necklace would look much sweeter being the only piece of jewellery. And maybe take a different hand-bag this seems a little out of place. I can totally see this outfit with a tan, more structured satchel that would look really pretty with the blue. And I love the hairstyle, very cute.

  • 25 Shels // Aug 23, 2011 at 6:08 pm

Love the blue! Can’t believe those heels are from Payless?!

I think your purse with this outfit is too big, you should use a clutch.  Everything else is perfect, braids are trendy, the necklace works well because of your heels.

Love it all..the more accessories the better. Those shoes are kick ass…I did a collab story on her shoes for More Magazine and really wanted to get a pair..and than never got around to it..dammit! Hopefully move a little faster this fall..
My only criticism is the white skirt…I don’t hate it….but how about a black mini??? just to make it more fall inspired?
Regardless you will look great!  Fashion is so subjective…if you loved how you felt in it..WEAR IT!

  • 27 taina princess // Aug 24, 2011 at 10:34 pm

Very cute outfit! Perhaps I would wear a necklace that is a different color, so that it is not matchy matchy with the shoes. Have fun!

  • 28 laura // Aug 25, 2011 at 8:25 pm

I think the heels with the blouse is a definite yes! I might second what a few others have said about swapping out the loose skirt for something more form-fitting. But I’ve never been to nyfw so I really have no clue! πŸ™‚

  • 29 Niki // Aug 26, 2011 at 10:50 am

Ok, I love love love the shoes.  I have to say though that this outfit looks a little like my niece when she is trying to play dress up.  The earrings w/ the hair is a no-go for me and the sunglasses make your face SUPER tiny, so it makes you look a little like your only 14 or 15 yrs old.  I love your sense of style and it pains me to actually say I don’t like an outfit…  πŸ™ I can’t even say I would replace one or two things. It just all feels wrong together.  I’m so sorry!

  • 30 Katy // Aug 26, 2011 at 10:54 am

You’re so sweet — no need to apologize!  I’m glad I posted this, because I’ve totally reconsidered it based on feedback from you guys!  I feel so lucky to have you guys to bounce ideas off of!  (And I think I have a much better possibility coming up!)
