1/2 cup butter
3/4 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup milk
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/3 cup sugar
3 tablespoons cornstarch
2 tablespoons butter, melted and cooled slightly
1 tablespoon dark rum
Directions
For the cake, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F with a rack in the middle position. Oil and flour two 8-inch round cake pans. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl.
