Getting eight people through an airport is a small logistics operation. Somebody always needs the bathroom, somebody drops a snack, and the last thing we need is a suitcase that cracks a wheel or pops open on the carousel. After one too many bags limping home held together with a luggage strap, we decided to invest in something that could take a beating.
We went with the DELSEY PARIS Helium Aero hardside as our main checked bag. The hard shell shrugs off the rough handling that a big family’s luggage inevitably takes, and the expandable zipper gives us that extra inch when the trip home somehow involves more stuff than the trip out. It rolls smoothly even when it is packed to the brim, which matters when one hand is usually holding a kid.
Against the other suitcases we compared, the DELSEY hit the sweet spot between airport-durable and actually affordable. The premium hardside brands cost noticeably more for a look we did not need, and the bargain-bin options felt like they would not survive a single family vacation. This one has held up trip after trip, the hard shell protects whatever fragile souvenir the kids insist on bringing home, and at the price it did not feel like a splurge. For our travel days, it just works.
