Our Kids' Favorite Building Blocks
After watching every age gravitate to the same bin, the building set we chose is MAGNA-TILES Classic — they keep all our kids building together for hours. Here's what we bought, plus a few others we seriously considered.

MAGNA-TILES Classic 32-Piece Magnetic Set
This is the building set we actually keep out. The magnets are strong, the tiles hold up to rough play, and they pull every age of our crew into the same project for hours.

Below the one we chose, we've rounded up a few others we considered for different ages and budgets.

The hardest trick with six kids of wildly different ages is finding one toy that pulls all of them into the same activity instead of six separate meltdowns. Most toys are too babyish for the older ones or too fiddly for the little hands, and they end up abandoned across the living room within twenty minutes. We were skeptical anything could bridge that gap.
MAGNA-TILES did it. We keep the Classic 32-piece magnetic set out on purpose, because the magnets are strong enough to build real towers and the tiles hold up to genuinely rough play. The baby stacks and knocks them down, the middle kids build garages, and our oldest engineers elaborate castles — all from the same pile, often on the same afternoon. It is rare to find one set that keeps every age of our crew building together for hours.
We looked at cheaper magnetic knock-off tiles, and the reviews and our gut both warned us off — weaker magnets and cracking plastic are exactly the failure points that would ruin it in a house like ours. The MAGNA-TILES have survived being stepped on, thrown, and left out in the sun on the porch, and the magnets have not given up. They cost a bit more than the imitators, but they have earned it in sheer hours of quiet, cross-age cooperation, which is worth its weight in gold around here.
