Counter Appliances Worth the Space

Our counter is prime real estate and we are ruthless about what earns a spot. These are the appliances that stayed — the ones we actually reach for on the busiest weeknights.

From our family

Why we chose it

Counter space in a family of eight is prime real estate, and for years ours was a graveyard of appliances we used twice a year. If something was going to earn a permanent spot by the outlet, it had to actually pull its weight most days of the week, not just at Thanksgiving. That was the test every gadget had to pass.

The one that keeps its spot is the Instant Pot Duo Mini, the 7-in-1 pressure cooker in the smaller size. We use a full-size pot for dinner, but the Mini became the workhorse for the little ones’ oatmeal, a quick batch of rice, or hard-boiled eggs for lunches, all without heating up a burner. Its small footprint is the whole point—it does a handful of jobs well and doesn’t hog the counter to do them.

We considered leaving it off the list in favor of bigger, flashier appliances, but the ones that earn their space are the ones we reach for daily, and this is one of them. The insert wipes clean, it replaces a couple of pots and a rice cooker we no longer own, and at around $90 it paid for itself in fewer takeout nights. For counter appliances actually worth the room, the Duo Mini makes the cut.
