For that first ride home, the infant seat we chose is the Chicco KeyFit — it clicks in so securely we never second-guess it. Here's what we bought, plus a few others we seriously considered.

Why we chose it

There is no piece of baby gear we are pickier about than the car seat, because it is the one thing standing between our newest little one and every distracted driver on the road. With a newborn in the house again, we wanted an infant seat we could install correctly without a wave of second-guessing every single time we buckled in and pulled out of the driveway.

The seat we trust is the UPPAbaby Mesa V3, and the confidence is the whole reason. The base installs with SmartSecure indicators that make a correct install easy to confirm at a glance — so we are never squinting at the angle wondering if it is right. And because the carrier clicks straight into our UPPAbaby stroller with no adapters, the baby goes from car to sidewalk in one motion, which matters when Mom and Dad are constantly handing off drop-off duty.

We looked at a couple of cheaper infant seats, but this is the one purchase where we do not cut corners. The Mesa V3 hit the balance we cared about: a rock-solid install we can verify in seconds, an included infant insert so it fits right from the newborn days, and a carrier that pairs with the stroller we already push every day. When it comes to the seat holding the baby, dependable and dead-simple to install beat every bell and whistle.
