Our Favorite Office Chair

For long work-from-home days, the office chair we chose is the Amazon Basics Ergonomic — the lumbar support survives an all-day grind. Here's what we bought, plus a few others we seriously considered.

From our family

Why we chose it

When both parents work from home and school happens at the kitchen table half the time, a good chair stops being a luxury and becomes a piece of survival gear. Ours used to be a wobbly hand-me-down that tipped if you leaned back too far, and Dad would finish a long workday with an ache in his lower back that no amount of stretching seemed to fix.

We settled on the Steelcase Gesture, and it fixed the problem the cheap chairs never could. The arms move in every direction and the back follows you instead of fighting you, so whoever sits down next — Mom for a morning of calls, Dad for an afternoon of spreadsheets, our oldest for a long homework stretch — can tune it to fit in seconds without hunting for tools or a manual. Dad’s end-of-day backache quietly disappeared, which was the whole point.

There is no way around it: this chair costs real money — more than we have ever spent on a place to sit. But we had already burned through the wobbly hand-me-down and a budget chair whose padding flattened inside a year, and a chair that two working parents and a homework-age kid use all day, every day, is exactly where the cost-per-hour math starts to make sense. The Gesture is built like it plans to outlive the mortgage, and after months of constant rotation it still feels brand new. Survival gear, it turns out, is worth buying once.
