Our Favorite Robot Vacuum

With this many floors to keep up with, the robot vacuum we chose is the Shark AI — it mops and vacuums on a schedule while we're at school pickup. Here's what we bought, plus a few others we seriously considered.

This is the robot vacuum we actually run. It vacuums and mops on a set schedule, empties into its own base so we barely touch it, and keeps up with crumbs and pet hair between deeper cleans.

From our family

Why we chose it

The floors in a house of eight never truly stay clean; you just try to stay ahead of them. Between six kids, endless snacks, and the crumbs that migrate from the kitchen to every other room, we were sweeping two or three times a day and still finding graham cracker gravel under our socks by bedtime. Add in pet hair and it felt like a losing battle we fought on our hands and knees.

The machine that gave us back that time is the Shark AV2501AE robot vacuum. As Mom puts it, it mops and vacuums on a schedule while we’re out at school pickup, then empties itself into its XL base so we barely touch it for weeks. It runs its LIDAR route around the toy piles, keeps up with crumbs and pet hair between our deeper cleans, and it’s genuinely the vacuum we rely on day to day rather than a gadget that ended up in a closet.

We looked at cheaper bump-and-roll robots and a couple of pricier flagships, but the Shark hit the sweet spot for a busy family. The self-emptying base is the real hero — nobody wants to empty a tiny bin daily in a house this messy — and the 60-day capacity means it’s close to hands-off. The LIDAR navigation actually maps our rooms instead of getting stuck under the couch, and at around $269.99 it undercut the premium models while doing the two jobs, vacuum and mop, that we needed most.
