Ingredients
- For cake:
- 3 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 3 cups sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 8 eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 3 3/4 cups cake flour
- 1 tablespoon ground ginger
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon finely grated orange zest
- For glaze:
- 1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
- 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
Directions
- Heat the oven to 325 degrees F. Butter a 9 inch springform pan. In a large bowl, cream the butter with the sugar until the mixture looks pale and airy, about 4 minutes. Mix in the vanilla extract.
- Add the eggs 1 at a time, beating well after each addition.
- In a medium bowl, whisk the flour, ginger, baking powder, and salt until evenly combined.
- Mix 1/3 of the flour mixture into the butter mixture. Beat in 1/2 of the milk. Add the rest of the flour mixture in 2 additions, alternating with the last of the milk. Beat in the orange zest.
- Scrape the batter into the prepared pan. Bake until the cake is golden and a tester inserted into the center comes out clean, about 90 minutes.
- As the cake cools, prepare the glaze. In a small bowl, whisk the orange juice with the confectioners' sugar until smooth.
- Once the cake is cool, spoon 1/2 of the glaze over the top. After the 1st coating has started to set, add the remaining glaze.
