my results from the LISTERINE® 21 Day Challenge!

March 3rd, 2015

So, that photo above?  That’s my new, healthier smile.  And I LOVE it.

I admit, I was a little skeptical that I’d be able to make over my oral care routine in three weeks.  But, you guys: it happened.  I finished the LISTERINE® 21 Day Challenge today, and I used antiseptic mouthwash every single day, morning and night.  And you know what I’m going to keep doing every day from now on?  That exact same habit.

I was hooked with in a few days, but here’s the funniest story from this past month.  My husband reads Sugarlaws, so he knew that I was participating in the challenge.  And after about a week, he asked me, “are you really using Listerine every morning and night?”  And I sort of grinned and told him that yes, not only was I absolutely using it twice a day, but that it was seriously the best feeling to have such a clean mouth all the time.

And a few days later, as we were brushing our teeth and getting ready for bed, I looked over at him.

And he was using Listerine.

Seriously, he’d gotten his own bottle, and he’d started using it too

That’s how much the 21-Day Challenge affected me: I even spread the habit to him!

And really, it’s a great habit to develop.  I love the super-clean feeling that LISTERINE® Antiseptic gives my mouth — it’s so fresh and feels so great, now I’m wondering how I ever lived without it.  I’m so grateful to participate in projects like this for Sugarlaws, because this is a habit I’ll be sticking with for years to come.  Adding LISTERINE® to my oral care routine was an easy change that produced immediate benefits, and I’m thrilled to know that I’ll be keeping my gums, teeth, and mouth healthier for years to come because of it.

Did you guys try the LISTERINE® 21-Day Challenge?  I’d love to hear about your results!  (And, more impotantly, did any of you guys win the Fitbit®?  My mom is obsessed with hers and I’ve been dying to try one!  I clicked through the email every day to see if I’d won, but hopefully one of you guys did!)

Disclosure: I received LISTERINE® Brand products from Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Products Division of McNEIL-PPC, Inc. as part of my participation in the LISTERINE® 21-Day Challenge. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this post are my own.

    Hi Katy!

Have been a long-time lurker on your blog… (did NOT realise you quit your job and started your own company aged 25, woah!)

I actually did go and buy a bottle of Listerine after reading your first blog post about it haha.  The one I bought was a mellower version though and stated ‘no alcohol’ on the bottle.  I opted for it as I’m not sure how I’d feel about gurgling alcohol around in my mouth…

Anyways!  I actually use an electric toothbrush so I dunno… using Listerine after that didn’t really make a difference.  My mouth felt tingly (marginally cleaner?) for about 10 more mins than what my toothbrush delivers but aside from that… nyeh, not much.  I still needed to floss afterwards and all it did was add more time to my morning routine.

    Am I doing it wrong??

Did you swish for 30 seconds at a time?  I found that I got much better results when I really hung in there for the whole 30 seconds, even when it stings at first.  I tried both the mellower kids version and the adult version and actually liked the adult version better and noticed better results with the stronger one.  (I think it does have alcohol though.) I also sometimes used it a mid-morning instead of along with my morning routine, which was definitely an instant freshener!

And haha, I’m older than 25… I was 31 when I quit!  (I’m definitely older than I look!)

RIGHT – totally misread what you wrote in ‘four things I learned from being a boss for the year’… aaaand now it makes a lot more sense!  Note to self: do not comment on stuff that you skim-read secretly during working hours, ehhem.  (You can definitely pass off as still in your 20’s so I’m going to blame that :p)

I don’t actually count how long I swish for (swish?  How does one actually swish…) – I kinda ‘swish’ until it’s become super foamy in my mouth and I can no longer contain it.  It’s like a pool of foam just escapes from my lips so I have to spit it out (lovely mental image I just gave you there, sorry!) although I think my mistake was trying to gurgle it a bit at some point?  Even when I don’t gurgle it just gets really foamy still.

I’m using Listerine Zero, which is for adults but is mild and alcohol-free.  I figured this would be the easiest way to ease myself in since I have never tried mouthwash before so even my first trial of this ‘mild’ version stung my mouth a lot.  The sting isn’t so bad now that I’m used to it though, but it doesn’t give me that fresher-for-longer feeling, or the feeling that I just deep-cleaned my mouth.

It doesn’t bother you that you’re swishing alcohol around in your mouth though?

Not really, but I always spit several times to make sure there’s none left over in my mouth!  (And obviously I never swallow it, lol!)

Mouthwash is essential for healthy gums.
