Ingredients
- 6 egg yolks
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup whole milk
- 5 tablespoons bourbon
- 1 teaspoon orange zest from 1 orange
- Dash Angostura bitters
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- Maraschino cherries, optional
Directions
- Whisk the egg yolks and sugar in a heavy saucepan until the mixture turns lighter and thickens. Gradually whisk in the cream, followed by the milk. When everything is blended, set the pan over medium heat and continue whisking often, until the mixture coats the spoon and a finger drawn through it leaves a clear path.
- Take the pan off the heat, then strain the ice cream base into an airtight container. Mix in the bourbon, orange zest, bitters, and salt. Cover the container and chill it in the refrigerator overnight.
- The following day, churn the base in an ice cream maker, following the manufacturer's directions. If you want an extra-smooth batch, strain the base once more before churning to catch the orange zest.
- You can eat it right away while it is soft, or move it to the freezer for at least 3 hours so it can firm up. For the full Old Fashioned effect, finish with a spoonful of maraschino cherries.
