Our Baby Boy Nursery!

May 2nd, 2014

We finished our nursery a few weeks ago, but I wanted to save the big reveal until after our son had arrived!  He’ll be sleeping in our bedroom for at least the first few weeks, but I am so excited at how beautiful his room turned out.

As I’ve written about before, when we bought our house, furniture was a bit of an afterthought — we were moving from a small apartment into a big house, and our first six months as homeowners were focused on saving up to put in the pool (not an easy task when you just put a down payment on your first house!).  So I had a very limited budget for furniture and decor — I tried to use what we already had, and added accents where we needed them.

But for the baby’s room, it was a different story.  It started as a complete blank slate — at one point, the room was supposed to be an office for me (the “Sugarlaws” room), but I was working full time and never ended up using it.  So it became… a junk room.

And if you think I’m exaggerating, I’m not.  I’ll try to dig up some “Before” photos so you can see the transformation for yourselves, but I’ll tell you, flat out, this room was in bad shape.

Garbage bag full of clothes we don’t wear? Throw it in the Sugarlaws room.  Random furniture that doesn’t work anywhere else? Sugarlaws room!  Bulky photography equipment? No need to clean it up, we can just close the door!  No one goes in there anyways, so who cares?

Yup… not exactly a beautiful, serene baby’s room.

So when I found out I was pregnant, the first thing I did was to throw away or donate every single item in that room that wasn’t necessary.  The rest, I organized carefully into the

I Love the baby’s room. My daughter is using grey with aqua and orange touches. Little Bear will enjoy his new surroundings I’m sure.

Congrats on your lil man! Love your nursery. It’s a similar color scheme to mine! http://www.allimcginnis.com/2014/03/music-inspired-nursery.html

Please stop calling him bear! Same name as some recent celeb babies and he will be made fun of! Dylan is a lovely name 🙂

Hi Katy! I know this post is old but I’ve had it bookmarked for the time we start working on Baby’s nursery … and that time is now! I’ve been to a dozen stores looking for a plush, soft rug for the nursery. I’ve been afraid to buy one online because I can’t feel it to see if it’s soft and squishy and really comfy for Baby to crawl on or push his/her face into … do you think the rug you got at RugsUSA is really plush and thick? Thanks for any help you can provide!

It’s definitely plush and think — it’s not as soft as some that I’ve seen, but I *really* like it.  Bear has crawled on it, although I generally prefer to keep him on play mats rather than the rug when he’s stick his face into the ground!

Thanks so much for the response. I think we are going to go ahead and get it, and will have a backup plan to use it in another room just in case.  They’re having a 70% off sale through today so I feel pressure to jump on it – so glad to hear you have a good recommendation for it.

On another note, I wanted to send condolences on the loss of your sweet doggy. So very sorry for your family. One of our three beloved cats passed away when I was only 9 weeks pregnant, and I can completely relate to some of the things you mentioned in your post. You picture your family a certain way (fur babies included) and it is heartbreaking to realize your child will not have life experiences with such a wonderful member of the family. Not to be a downer (gah, these hormones), but I just wanted to send out a virtual hug.
