Preheat a waffle iron according to the manufacturers instructions. Grease with butter or cooking spray if necessary.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg and melted butter or oil until combined. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined . The batter should be slightly lumpy.
Spoon about 1/4 cup of batter onto the preheated waffle iron and spread it out evenly with a spatula or spoon. Close the lid and cook for 3 to 5 minutes or until golden brown and crisp. Repeat with remaining batter. Serve warm with your favorite toppings such as syrup, butter or fresh fruit!.
