Old-Time Eastern North Carolina Barbecue Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1 gallon cider vinegar
  • 1 1/3 cup crushed red pepper
  • 2 tablespoons black pepper
  • 1/4 cup salt

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the salt, black pepper, and crushed red pepper.
  2. Slowly add the cider vinegar to the mixture while stirring continuously.
  3. Once all of the ingredients are combined, transfer the sauce to an airtight container and store in a cool place for up to two weeks.
  4. When ready to use, heat the sauce over medium-low heat until it reaches a simmer.
  5. Simmer for 10 minutes before serving with your favorite barbecue dish.
