tutorial: blake lively beach waves

July 15th, 2011

So, I’m honestly a little obsessed with Blake Lively.  She’s so, so beautiful and always has that easy, California-girl, beachy style.

When I went blonde, one of the things I was most excited about was getting to recreate some of Blake’s beauty and hair looks!  I think I probably mentioned her six times to my hairdresser when she was putting the highlights in.

Beach waves are my favorite hairstyle this summer, and I’m so excited that I finally got this one right.  The secret is a tapered, clampless curling iron — totally amazing, and gives perfect waves every time.  I got mine at Bed Bath and Beyond’s beauty section, and it was about $40 (since then, I’ve seen the same one at a drugstore for $10 more), and Amazon has it for $35 with free shipping

If you’d asked me five years ago if owning four separate curling irons (plus two flatirons and a blowdryer) was ridiculous, I probably would have said yes.

But I would have been wrong!

Because I tried for a long time to get this style with the curling irons I already had, and nothing worked this well.  If you really want summer beach waves, $35 for this one isn’t such a bad investment.

Blake is one of my style icons – she is always so classy, chic, beautiful, and all the above relating to those. And her hair is absolutely gorgeous!

I think I MUST own that curling iron! I get annoyed with my clamping iron, so I hardly ever use it, but I want to curl my hair from time to time. I also need to grow my hair out, it used to be as long as your until I chopped it off two years ago, but I want it long again so I can do beachy waves! This tutorial is great, I’m glad I got to see someone using this iron so I can go buy it now!

I love this hairstyle!  Do you think it would work on hair that’s naturally curly too?

  • 4 Katy // Jul 15, 2011 at 2:12 pm

Jess — I think it definitely would!  My hair is naturally wavy and it works really well on me — but let me know how it goes!

Sara — OMG, you’re going to love it!!!

    Thanks guys!

absolutely gorgeous! I need that curling iron. Like, right now.
I tried to get those waves by getting pillow rollers because those worked out amazing for you, but my hair is thick and I got like these really weird curls.
    This looks perfect! I want.

[…] On Saturday morning, I had my hair and makeup done for a photoshoot (more on that soon!) and I couldn’t resist snapping a few photos before this weekend’s heat, humidity and rain got the best of me. I love these loose, beachy curls — to get the same effect, use a 1-inch curling iron without the clamp, or follow my tutorial here. […]

I love this hairstyle! I have been struggling to get it just right. I have never tried one of those curling irons, but have recently started seeing them around. Good to know there is a cheaper alternative to the ones that cost about $150!

Your hair looks beautiful! Thanks for the tips!

Already set my mind on buying my first curling iron!

    Great job, Katy!
May I ask which hairspray is good for this?
I’m considering get a sea salt spray- Bumble and Bumble etc.

    What do you recommend?(=
