Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 10 tablespoons butter, chilled
- 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 5-6 tablespoons ice water
- 1 jar Nutella
- 2 medium bananas
- 1 quart vegetable oil
- Powdered sugar, for sprinkling
Directions
- For the crust, add the flour, sugar, salt, butter, and cardamom to a food processor and pulse until the mixture starts to pull away from the sides. Drizzle in the ice water slowly, 1 tablespoon at a time, stopping when the dough holds together and is easy to shape into a ball. Press it into a 1/4-inch disc, wrap it in plastic wrap, and chill it in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
- To assemble, remove the dough from the wrapping and roll it on a lightly floured surface until it is 1/8-inch thick. Cut out 10 to 12 rounds with a 4-inch round cookie cutter, collecting the scraps and rolling them again as needed. Spoon 1 tablespoon of Nutella into the middle of each round, then add 2-3 banana slices. Fold each circle closed and press the edges with a fork to seal.
- Pour the oil into a heavy bottomed pot and heat it to 350 degrees F. Working in batches of 3, use a slotted spoon to carefully lower the pies into the hot oil, then fry until they are golden brown, about 3 to 4 minutes. Move them to a paper towel-lined plate to cool. Dust with powdered sugar, and serve.
