Ingredients
- 1 lb ground bison
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 hamburger buns
- For the thousand island barbecue dressing:
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
- 2 tablespoons barbecue sauce
Directions
- Set up your gas or charcoal grill for medium-high heat.
- In a small bowl, stir the mayonnaise and chili sauce with 2 tsp. barbecue sauce, sweet pickle relish, and Worcestershire sauce. Put the dressing aside.
- Place the bison in a medium bowl. Using your hands, gently fold in the barbecue sauce that remains, 2 tsp., plus salt, 1 1/4 tsp., and pepper, 3/4 tsp. Shape the mixture into 4 patties, each 1/2- to 3/4-inch-thick.
- Brush the grill grate with a light coating of oil, then lay the patties on it. Close the lid and let the burgers cook over the heat for 4 to 5 minutes. Turn them over, cover the grill again, and keep cooking until they reach the doneness you want, about 5 minutes for medium; an instant-read thermometer should read 130°F to 135°F.
- As the burgers cook, toast the rolls on the grill. Spoon some dressing onto the cut side of each roll half. Add a lettuce leaf to each top half, then place tomato over it, a slice or two. When the burgers are ready, move them to the bottom halves. Close the sandwiches, slice them in half if you like, and serve.
