Best Kids Anime Costumes in 2026: The One We Chose for Halloween

With six kids, Halloween costumes get decided in August and argued about until October, and this year anime won the vote. The costume we chose is the Tanjiro set from Demon Slayer — the green-and-black checkered haori, uniform, belt, leg wraps, earrings and forehead-mark stickers all come in one bag, so nothing needs hunting down the night before. Here’s what we bought, plus a few others we seriously considered.

A kids’ anime costume has to do more than look right in the photo. Ours had to clear three bars: it comes complete, so the whole character is in the bag and we are not ordering a belt and a wig separately, it is comfortable enough to wear for a full evening of trick-or-treating and a school parade the next morning, and it holds up to a kid running, climbing and sitting on the floor in it. Real sizing by age, and fabric that survives a cold-water wash, counted for a lot too.

The Tanjiro set at the top is the one we chose. Below the one we chose, we’ve rounded up a few others we considered for different shows, ages and budgets — including the matching Nezuko for a sibling set, the classics from Naruto and Dragon Ball, and a cozy Pikachu for the littlest trick-or-treaters.

From our family

Why we chose it

Costume season in our house starts earlier than anyone would guess. By late summer there are six opinions, at least two changes of heart per kid, and a running list on the fridge that gets crossed out and rewritten more than once. This year, one of our kids came to the table with a decision already made and a very specific description: the green-and-black checkered jacket, the black uniform, the earrings, and the mark on the forehead. Anyone who has watched Demon Slayer knows exactly who that is.

We chose this Tanjiro set because it is the whole character in one order. The haori, the uniform top and pants, the white belt, the leg wraps, the hanafuda earrings and a sheet of forehead-mark stickers are all in the bag, which matters when you are costuming six people and do not want a second round of shipping for the one piece that makes it recognizable. The fabric is soft enough to wear for hours, the sizing runs by age from 4 up to 13, and it has held a strong rating from other parents. At around forty-five dollars it is not the cheapest costume on this page, but it is the one that did not need anything added to it.

We looked hard at the licensed options from Spirit Halloween, Rubie’s and InSpirit Designs, and several of them are on this list for good reason — the Nezuko is the obvious pick if a sibling wants to match, and the Pikachu kigurumi is the one we would hand a younger kid who just wants to be warm and cute. Tanjiro won because it was complete, comfortable and exactly the character that was asked for.

For the rest of the season, our family board games guide covers what we play on the nights after Halloween when everyone is still wound up on candy, and our building blocks guide has the sets that keep the costume-obsessed busy the rest of the year.
