Our Favorite Coffee Maker

For a full house before school, the coffee maker we chose is the Cuisinart Brew Central — a 12-cup carafe keeps everyone caffeinated. Here's what we bought, plus a few others we seriously considered.

BUNN HB Heat N Brew Programmable Coffee Maker, 10 cup, Stainless Steel, 46500.0003

Bunn · $175.00

This is the coffee maker we actually use. It heats the water to the right temperature before it ever starts brewing, so the whole pot comes out rich instead of thin, and the timer means the coffee is ready before the first kid is up. The 10-cup carafe covers both parents — with enough left for Grandma.

Why we chose it

Mornings in our house run on a countdown clock. Backpacks, lost shoes, someone who suddenly remembers a permission slip, and underneath all of it two very tired parents who need coffee before any of that is survivable. Our old four-cup maker was a joke — Mom would fill a mug, and by the time Dad wandered in there was nothing left but a warm brown smell and an empty pot.

The one that fixed our mornings is the BUNN Heat N Brew. It heats the water fully before it starts brewing — which sounds fussy until you taste the difference, because the whole pot comes out rich instead of thin. And the timer is still the hero: Mom loads it the night before, and it brews on its own so the coffee’s ready and waiting before the first kid is even awake — no fumbling with buttons at six in the morning.

We’d looked at single-serve pod machines and a few cheaper drip makers, but pods would’ve meant standing there brewing cup after cup when two adults want refills, and the bargain machines make exactly the watery coffee we were trying to escape. The BUNN costs more than a basic drip — no way around it — but it’s a sturdy stainless machine that earned its counter spot fast: the 10-cup carafe covers both parents with enough left for Grandma when she stops by, and the pot it brews is genuinely worth getting up for. A morning without it is not a morning we want to relive.
