Our Favorite Countertop Ice Maker

Six kids and a hot summer means the freezer ice trays are empty by lunch. The ice maker we chose is the EUHOMY Countertop Ice Maker: it makes a fresh batch in minutes, the carry handle makes it easy to move to the patio, and it costs less than most of the others. Here's the one we chose, plus a few others we seriously considered.

What we chose
EUHOMY Countertop Ice Maker Machine with Handle

EUHOMY Countertop Ice Maker Machine with Handle

EUHOMY · $66.46

This is the countertop ice maker we actually use. It cranks out a fresh batch of ice in minutes, which our freezer trays never kept up with for a family of eight, and the little ones can scoop their own without a mess.

Before you buy, check four things: The ice type, because bullet ice is hard and cheap to make while nugget ice is soft and chewable, and nugget machines cost a lot more. Daily output versus bin size, since the bin only holds a small amount and isn’t a freezer, so ice slowly melts back into the reservoir unless you move it to a freezer bag. Cleaning, because these machines need regular cleaning and descaling to stay sanitary, and a self-clean cycle makes that much easier to keep up with. How it fills, since most countertop models need you to pour water in by hand, which is fine for parties but gets old with daily use.

For backup ice on busy weekends, a budget bullet-ice maker is plenty. If your family orders drinks just for the chewable ice, a nugget machine is worth the extra money.

The EUHOMY at the top is the one we chose. Below it are the others we considered: the Silonn nugget ice maker as the lower-cost way into chewable ice, the Frigidaire nugget ice maker from a big appliance brand, and a second EUHOMY model if ours is out of stock.

Why we chose it

Summer in our house means the ice runs out by noon. Eight people, everyone wanting a cold drink, the little ones fishing cubes out for no reason at all, and our freezer’s two little trays never stood a chance. Dad got tired of the daily complaint that there was “no ice again,” and hauling bags home from the store just meant a soggy freezer and a puddle by dinner.

The EUHOMY Countertop Ice Maker fixed the shortage without us thinking about it anymore. It sits on the counter, and it churns out a fresh batch of cubes in under fifteen minutes, fast enough to keep up with a crowd of kids who treat ice like a snack. The handle makes it easy to move to wherever the drinks are happening — the porch on a hot afternoon, the table at dinner — and it just keeps producing so the bin’s full again by the time it’s emptied.

We compared it against a couple of other countertop makers and briefly considered springing for a fridge with a built-in dispenser. The new fridge was wildly more than we wanted to spend to solve one summer problem, and the other countertop units were either slower or too small for our volume. The EUHOMY won on plain value: at $89.99 it makes ice faster than we can drink it, takes up little room, and cost a fraction of the fridge upgrade. It’s a small thing, but it quietly ended one of the most reliable summer arguments in our house.
