Our Favorite Screen-Free Toys
Rainy afternoons and long weekends go a lot better when there's a toy the kids pull out without being asked. The one we'd buy again first is the MAGNA-TILES Classic 100-piece set: it's big enough to build real towers and houses, it works for toddlers and big kids alike, and the tiles hold up to years of play. Here's the one we'd buy again first, plus the rest of the list.
MAGNA-TILES Classic 100-Piece Magnetic Construction Set
This is the screen-free toy that actually comes out every day. The 100-piece set is enough to build big, the open-ended play never gets old, and every age in the house ends up joining in.
Check price on AmazonA toy earns a spot on this list when it’s open-ended, so it plays differently every time; sturdy enough to survive a houseful of kids; and good across ages, so siblings can play together instead of fighting over it. We also wanted toys that hold attention on their own, without batteries doing all the work.
For the little ones, the Toniebox bundle gives them stories and songs they control themselves, with no screen, and the Melissa & Doug pattern blocks are quiet shape play they can do on their own. For builders of every age, the MAGNA-TILES Combo 46 set adds on to the classic box, and two LEGO sets range from the 3-in-1 Red Fox for younger builders to the Robot World Roller Coaster for the big kids. For the big kids, Kanoodle is a pocket-size logic puzzle, and the Crayola art case keeps rainy-day supplies in one place.
The MAGNA-TILES Classic 100-piece set at the top is the one we’d buy again first. Below it is the rest of the list.
