Our Favorite Treadmill

Winter in a full house is a special kind of chaos—six kids bouncing off the walls and nowhere for the grown-ups to burn off a little stress. Mom used to squeeze in a walk after bedtime, but the sidewalks ice over by November and nobody wants to lace up in the dark. The basement had the room; it just needed something to fill it.

We went with the NordicTrack T 6.5 S, a best-selling walking and running treadmill that came in around $799. It hit the sweet spot for us: sturdy enough that Mom can actually run on it and Dad can jump on after work, but not so enormous it swallowed the whole basement. The deck folds up when the little ones want that floor for a fort, which happens more often than we’d like to admit.

We looked at cheaper folding models and a couple of splurgy ones with giant screens, and the NordicTrack landed right in the middle where it counts. The frame doesn’t wobble when someone picks up the pace, the incline gives Mom a real workout without much space, and it has shrugged off a year of a busy household treating it like furniture. For a family where the machine has to survive everyone from Grandma’s slow walks to Dad’s sprints, boring reliability was exactly what we wanted.
