Ingredients
- 2 slices dark rye bread
- Several thin slices of aged, Gruyere Swiss cheese
- 1/3 cup drained and heated sauerkraut
- 2 teaspoons of butter
Directions
- Set a frying pan over medium high heat. Butter 1 side of each slice of bread, then lay the slices in the hot pan with the buttered sides facing down.
- Place a layer of cheese on 1 of the bread slices. When the bread has started to color lightly and the cheese is beginning to relax, spoon the heated sauerkraut over the cheesy slice. With a spatula, turn the plain bread slice over onto the sauerkraut and cheese.
- After about 30 sec, take a peek to see whether the cheese is starting to melt. If it is, turn the sandwich over and toast the second side for 1 minute more or less, just until the cheese is melted but not runny. Take the sandwich out of the pan and cut it in half.
