Ingredients
- 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp rice vinegar
- 2 tsp peeled and finely minced fresh ginger
- 1 1/2 tsp finely minced garlic
- 1 1/2 tsp sesame oil
- 3/4 tsp Chinese Five Spice Powder
- Salt and/or a splash of honey, as needed
- Vegetable oil, for brushing grill
- Sliced green onions and sesame seeds, for serving
Directions
- Heat a gas grill over medium-high until it is about 400 degrees. While that happens, use the flat side of a meat mallet to pound the chicken into an even thickness.
- In a small mixing bowl, whisk the hoisin sauce with the ginger, garlic, sesame oil, Chinese Five Spice Blend, soy sauce, and rice vinegar. Taste it, then adjust with salt and/or honey as needed. Move half of the mixture into a separate small bowl.
- Give the grill grates a light coating of oil. Set the chicken on the grill for 4 minutes, then use the sauce from 1 bowl to coat both sides.
- Keep cooking it on the opposite side until it is almost done, about 3 minutes longer. With a clean basting brush, coat both sides with the remaining sauce, then grill about 1 minute longer, or until the center reads 165 on an instant read thermometer.
- Serve it warm, finishing with green onions and sesame seeds.
