How to Make Whipped Cream
Cold cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla whip into a soft, billowy topping for pies, cakes, fruit, and sundaes.
Prep 5 min · Makes about 2 cups

Ingredients
- 1 cup cold heavy whipping cream
- 1 to 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions
- Set a large bowl over a bag of frozen vegetables to keep it cold, then pour the cold heavy whipping cream into the bowl. A hand whisk gives you the most control over the texture, but if you choose a hand mixer, begin on low and raise the speed as the cream gains body. Start whisking.
- When the cream has begun to thicken but has not yet reached soft peaks, sprinkle in the sugar. Keep whisking.
- Once the cream is nearly as loose or firm as you want it, mix in the vanilla extract, or another flavoring if you are using one.
- Use the whipped cream right away if you can. To hold it for later, transfer it to an airtight container and refrigerate; before serving, it may need a quick whisk to bring it back.
