I’m sure you guys remember the COVERGIRL Natureluxe foundation from my Oscars videos — it provided a smooth, even base for me to recreate Natalie and Mila’s gorgeous makeup.  But in this video, the foundation is the spotlight — in it, I show you some tips and tricks to get a flawless, natural look using nothing but foundation.

The thing I love best about the Natureluxe foundation is that it feels SO light — way lighter than any other foundation I’ve tried.  It doesn’t give you that heavy, matted feeling if you wear it all day, so it’s basically become my go-to foundation most days since I tried it.  It kind of has the feel of a tinted moisturizer combined with the coverage of a foundation, which is pretty amazing.

I don’t wear a lot of makeup on a day to day basis, but a great foundation is crucial to look polished, even if you wear nothing else.  My skin definitely has its issues — without foundation to even it out, it can be blotchy and uneven, and I definitely have to touch up my undereye circles on a daily basis.  But the trick of really good makeup is to fix all that without making it look like you’re wearing makeup — which is what this video will show you how to do!

And if you want to try the COVERGIRL NatureLuxe foundation yourself, COVERGIRL is giving away packages of NatureLuxe gloss balm and coupons for free NatureLuxe foundation to twenty five winners!  You can enter in two ways:

1) Leave a comment below telling me your favorite makeup trick!

or

2) Subscribe to the Sugarlaws YouTube channel and leave a comment on this video!  I’m going to be adding additional content there over the next few months, so get a head start now (and an extra giveaway entry) by subscribing.

Fave makeup trick ever: the spoon-as-eyelash curler. I don’t do it as often as I should, but when I do…amazing!!

  • 2 Shasie // Apr 15, 2011 at 8:07 am

My Favorite Makeup trip is using eye primer before putting on eye shadows. It allows the color to stand out, and the color lasts longer.

Spend a little more and buy good brushes.

  • 4 Jess // Apr 15, 2011 at 10:23 am

Three coats of mascara (learned that from your last video)!  Pick me!

My Favorite makeup tip is hilighter on my cheeks for a dewy, healthy glow. Healtthy skin is always in!

That sounds amazing! I am always looking for a great foundation, perfect coverage but not caky….
    Thanks for the tips! xo.

A cobalt blue mascara (I use Estee Lauders) really makes my blue eyes pop (usually I only do this when going out). To be less obvious, I coat it close to my eyes and go over the tips with black.

Your skin looks so glowy! I’d love to try that foundation :)

  • 10 Franci // Apr 15, 2011 at 11:38 am

I swipe my eyeliner pencil quickly over a lighter flame when I want a thicker, more dramatic nighttime look! An old trick my mom taught me from her disco days!

  • 11 Jen // Apr 15, 2011 at 2:18 pm

I use Bareminerals pure radiance (an all over neutral face shimmer) on my eyes for an everyday neutral eyeshadow that gives just the right amount of sparkle and makes my eyes pop and looks bright and awake.

  • 12 lauren // Apr 15, 2011 at 2:26 pm

This foundation looks great! I love primer – I feel like it makes the makeup last so much longer.

  • 13 Lawyer Loves Lunch // Apr 15, 2011 at 3:31 pm

I always wear a touch of blush, especially when I’m really tired.  It helps my face look so much brighter and makes me feel more awake :)

  • 14 Stee // Apr 15, 2011 at 4:10 pm

I’m surprised you are raving about this product. It didn’t get a very good review from Beautypedia. And only has an SPF 10.
My favorite makeup trick is to use an eyelash curler for great lashes.

  • 15 Katy // Apr 15, 2011 at 4:18 pm

Stee — I’ve been wearing it almost every day (including today)!  I would love for it to be SPF 15, but 10 is still a LOT better than nothing (and I’m only outside during the day for a few minutes at a time most days).

  • 16 Carrie // Apr 15, 2011 at 5:30 pm

I’ve started to realize how good lotion is for my skin so I’ve started using L’Oreal Total Effects every night before I go to bed.  Even though it’s not as dry as winter, my skin still needs some love :)

  • 17 Amy // Apr 15, 2011 at 9:20 pm

I don’t like to wear heavy make up so I usually just use a little powder but I think this is just what I need for better coverage!

  • 18 Rachel // Apr 15, 2011 at 9:35 pm

I like to heat up my eyelash curler with my hairdryer before I use it.  It keeps my very straight lashes curled all day long!

  • 19 Rachel from Love a la Mode // Apr 16, 2011 at 3:09 am

I love trying new beauty products and would love to give this one a whirl! One of my favorite makeup tricks is that I always pucker my lips while applying blush, so I can see where my cheekbone line is.

  • 20 Erin // Apr 16, 2011 at 10:01 am

My favorite makeup trick is to line only the outer half of my upper eyelids – it makes my eyes look wide and awake.

  • 21 Sushu // Apr 16, 2011 at 11:22 am

My make-up trick is that I use an oil absorbent paper to blot excess oil off my face before putting on foundation.

  • 22 Sara // Apr 16, 2011 at 12:26 pm

My favorite makeup trick? Filling in my brows. They are very light and a bit sparse, so I like to fill in just a bit with a light brown powder. Having full-looking brows totally frames my face better, and brings more attention to my eyes :)

  • 23 susitravl // Apr 16, 2011 at 1:34 pm

I put foundation on my eyelids before I put on eye shadow – it stays on a lot longer for me.

  • 24 Grace // Apr 16, 2011 at 2:57 pm

I love putting highlighter on my cheekbones!

  • 25 emily // Apr 16, 2011 at 7:19 pm

After applying foundation, don’t forget to wipe excess makeup from your eyebrows.  Otherwise, in photos in particular, your eyebrows won’t show up!

  • 26 emily // Apr 16, 2011 at 7:20 pm

Use cream blush on the apples of your cheeks, on your temples to give the effect of dewy complexion!

  • 27 Hannah // Apr 17, 2011 at 1:10 am

I like to line my lower lashes, the inner corners of my eyes, and the arches of my brows with a white eye pencil, then blend with my fingers so it doesn’t look obvious. This wakes up and defines the whole eye area; Wet n’ Wild pencils do the job just fine!

  • 28 Elizabeth // Apr 17, 2011 at 11:01 am

I never leave the house without curling my eyelashes and putting on a quick coat of mascara!

  • 29 Jenna // Apr 17, 2011 at 2:18 pm

Splurge on concealer and foundation, and buy cheap mascara and eyeshadow!

To keep your lips smooth – put petroleum jelly on them and use a soft toothbrush to gently massage in the jelly.  Wipe off excess with a tissue.  No more scaly lips :)

  • 32 Julie Rosier // Apr 18, 2011 at 11:52 am

I also dust a translucent powder over my lipstick to prolong it and I use a light brown eyeliner on my brows rather than powder.  Don’t use too heavy and a hand and it really makes my brows pop!

  • 33 Maddy C // Apr 18, 2011 at 11:55 am

My favorite tip: moisturize before applying makeup! It makes foundation go on so much smoother and it’s better for your skin too. Also, using sugar as a slight lip scrub. Rub some on your lips before lip balm. It’s sweet and removes and dead skin.

  • 34 Christie R // Apr 18, 2011 at 11:55 am

I make sure I drink lots of water and get lots of sleep.  It makes a world of difference!

  • 35 Gigi // Apr 18, 2011 at 11:58 am

My favorite make up trick is to moisturize!  I think this is the key to a great skin foundation for makeup!

  • 36 Angie // Apr 18, 2011 at 11:59 am

I love wearing waterproof mascara, but it is so hard to get off. My favorite makeup trick is to apply a coat of regular mascara first, then topping it with waterproof. The waterproof mascara locks onto the other mascara instead of your lashes, so it comes off more easily.
Thank you for the contest. I would love to win. xoxo, Angie

  • 37 Elle // Apr 18, 2011 at 12:03 pm

Wow, great review/video! And you’re so damn cute. My biggest tip is moisturize moisturize moisturize! When I was a teenager, I always washed my face with Noxzema and kept my skin nice and clean. When I turned 18, I started using Oil of Olay-every single day, without fail–after every time I washed my face. It sounds funny, like at the time-old lady stuff, haha! But now, people tell me I look 10-15 years younger than I actually am!

  • 38 Carol // Apr 18, 2011 at 12:06 pm

    Hey girl hey!

My fav makeup tip is to wiggle the mascara wand into your lash line before swooping out to cover the lashes…makes them look so much longer!

    Love your site :o)

  • 39 Mia // Apr 18, 2011 at 12:10 pm

Love the tricks you have posted and very soon will try them.
My simple trick: Always I Use a brush to apply foundation, cause using my hand makes me look blotchy.. And wash my make up brush every other day :)

  • 40 sweetartlet // Apr 18, 2011 at 12:15 pm

Fave makeup trick: Petroluem jelly as gloss!  Can’t get much cheaper than that…

  • 41 Priscilla // Apr 18, 2011 at 12:29 pm

My favorite makeup trick is a translucent powder on my under eye area after concealer. I have very bad dark circles around my eyes so I NEED to set it with powder. But regular face powder leaves it cakey and sets into the little lines so I need some transulcent powder. Works sooooo great!

  • 42 Danita Roshonda Cozart // Apr 18, 2011 at 12:35 pm

These tricks Im reading are really useful. I found my lipstick stays longer if you line your lips fully with a matching liner before you apply lipstick.

  • 43 Willy // Apr 18, 2011 at 12:39 pm

My favorite trick that I use everyday is to dot a little highlighting powder on the inner corners of my eye and right on my brow bone below my eyebrow. That plus mascara makes for a fast, easy and natural look for those days when time is limited but you still want to look fresh.

  • 44 Gina // Apr 18, 2011 at 12:39 pm

Great video! Camera loves you haha

My favourite makeup trick is something I learned from my mama. Using lipstick as blush! I’ve been told not to do that because the formula is made for lips, not skin…but I’ve never had a problem with breakouts, and it’s just so much creamier than powder blush and I love multipurpose products! :)

  • 45 Mona // Apr 18, 2011 at 12:56 pm

I smile when I put blush on, making sure the blush goes on the apple of the cheeks. To complete the look I use highlighter (very light) on the top of cheek bones and on the eyebrow bone, and use a light gloss. Super natural look!

  • 46 Virginia C // Apr 18, 2011 at 1:16 pm

I love using a light shimmer powder over my concealer. It helps deflect from everything else while making me look fresh:)

  • 47 Lauren B. // Apr 18, 2011 at 1:29 pm

love this foundation and dying to try the gloss balm

fave make-up trick: be willing to spend a little more to get the good stuff

  • 48 Carmenm // Apr 18, 2011 at 1:29 pm

I never know what type of foundation to use so I always end up picking different ones. I really want to be able to use just one. My favorite makeup trick is to use a spoon to curl my eyelashes! I love it! Helps me be more in control when curling them! And they come out great:)

  • 49 Rachel Truong // Apr 18, 2011 at 3:02 pm

  • 52 Ashley Kasper // Apr 18, 2011 at 4:58 pm

ALWAYS making sure you start with a moisturizer!  It helps your skin so much, and makes applying/smoothing foundation evenly so easy!

  • 53 Lindsey // Apr 18, 2011 at 7:38 pm

I love Urban Decay’s Primer Potion, especially the shimmery one!  I hate when my eye shadow creases or rubs off and this primer is the best I’ve found!

  • 62 Lindsey // Apr 20, 2011 at 11:56 am

My favorite makeup trick is to make sure I use mouristurizer first and let it sit for a couple minutes so my skin is nice and hydrating before puting on foundation. Helps it go on smooth and not flake.
