I have something to admit.

I’m actually a little terrified of getting my hair cut.

People ask me all the time how I get my hair to grow so long, and the truth is that I put off getting haircuts for at least six months at a time.  I had a series of bad cuts in high school and early college (including a very bad mishap where I believe a stylist who told me I could totally rock Kate-Moss-bangs . . . to this day, I lack photographic evidence the following six months of my life thanks to him).

But last week, I was invited into Paul Labrecque for a haircut and some summer styling tips!  Since Paul Labrecque has been responsible for two of the best hairstyles I’ve ever had, I decided to put aside my haircut phobia for the afternoon.

And Caroline did an amazing job — she didn’t even bat an eye when I showed her my shaggy six-months-without-a-trim layers.  She only took off about an inch of my hair, but how much better does it look?  We recreated these Kate Middleton-inspired waves using a larger barrel curling iron and a tiny bit of backcombing on the crown of my head — I want to find a way to add that detail to my Kate Middleton hair tutorial!

She also gave me some amazing summer styling tips — it’s so important to remember that your hair needs extra TLC when the weather gets warm!  First of all, don’t forget to protect your hair from the sun (now that my hair is colored, I’m always really careful about this)!  Shampoo and conditioner like this Repair Line protect your hair against sun rays, and so do chic summer hats!  And no matter how much you protect your hair from the sun, a deep conditioning treatment once a week is a must.

And a great way to protect your hair is with Paul Labrecque’s Repair Line!  One lucky winner will get all four products, the shampoo, conditioner, hydrating hair lotion, and grooming control cream (valued at $115)!  To enter, leave a comment below telling me your favorite summer hairstyle!

US shipping only.  I’ll pick a random winner next week!

PS — Sorry I look so crazy-eyed in these photos!  It was 105 degrees that day and I decided to walk 20 blocks to the salon because, well, I’m a giant idiot.  Needless to say, any makeup I’d put on that morning was likely gone by the time we took these photos.

Update: The winner is comment 25, Lynda!  Congratulations!

I love braids in the summer and have braided my hair every which way…it’s easy and it keeps me cool.  Your hair looks great!

  • 2 Caroline @ chocolate and carrots // Jul 29, 2011 at 6:53 am

I have naturally wavy hair and I’ve been loving doing a little front french braid to keep the fuzzy front hair down and out of my face and scrunching the rest of my hair with some mousse. Love it! :-) Thanks for the giveaway!

  • 3 Carolyn // Jul 29, 2011 at 7:32 am

a cute little ponytail with my sideswept bangs :) it’s too hot for anything else!

  • 4 Sara // Jul 29, 2011 at 7:39 am

I love the beachy waves look, but when it gets super hot I like to French braid my bangs back from the side into a ponytail–more interesting than a normal ponytail!

  • 5 Lindsey // Jul 29, 2011 at 7:40 am

I’m a new mom and it’s been ungodly hot in upstate NY, so on mornings I wash my hair I usually throw in some product to scrunch it and go. If I don’t even have time to wash my hair, I rock a chignon. I’m all about minimal effort with maximum effect, and I know how useful great products are in achieving that! When my hair’s pulled back I do like to spend a little more time on my makeup, since my face is on display!

I just try to get it up off my face, its so hot and humid where I live! I’m the same way about getting my hair cut, finally when in for a trim yesterday (after about 6 months). Thanks for the giveaway!

  • 7 Ayshu // Jul 29, 2011 at 8:33 am

Am in so much love with side bang weaves offlate, am planning to get it done this weekend.  Yayyyy! Cant wait for it

  • 8 Nicole // Jul 29, 2011 at 8:33 am

I love the classy Kate Middleton look you’re sporting here!

My favorite summer hairstyle is wavy and natural. I’ll add a little gel or some spray and that’s about it!

    Thanks for the giveaway!  :)

  • 9 Taylor { TheProposalEnthusiast} // Jul 29, 2011 at 8:41 am

A fabulous low bun or wavy curls. Or wavy curls pulled up in a low bun. Thanks!

  • 10 Angelique // Jul 29, 2011 at 8:41 am

I have naturally wavy hair, so I love rocking the beachy look during the summer.  It’s so easy!

  • 11 Grace // Jul 29, 2011 at 8:48 am

Low braid over one shoulder. Keeps your neck cool and the little strands out of your face while still looking fresh and chic!

  • 12 Mary Lane // Jul 29, 2011 at 8:58 am

The best I can usually manage is a high, clean ponytail… it’s too hot for too much styling!

  • 13 Leslie C // Jul 29, 2011 at 9:03 am

three tiny buns at the base of my hairline. loosely pinned with bobby pins. cute! whimsical! and it keeps me cool.

  • 14 Maddy c // Jul 29, 2011 at 9:27 am

I’m the same way! I adore my hair and hate the thought of anything bad happening to it. It is ridiculously hot here in Alabama as well. Thus, I have been doing a high bun that resembles more of a top knot and leaving a few naturally wavy strands down to frame my face. Love this giveaway!

  • 15 Kristen // Jul 29, 2011 at 9:41 am

I am loving beachy-natural waves right now!

  • 16 Liza Lucas // Jul 29, 2011 at 9:48 am

what a great giveaway! do they specialize in color as well? i’m ready to switch it up!

  • 17 Natalie // Jul 29, 2011 at 9:50 am

Your hair looks great!  Awesome giveaway (as always)!

  • 18 Heather Greenwood // Jul 29, 2011 at 9:53 am

    I love a simple pony tail…no fuss :-)

  • 19 Caroline // Jul 29, 2011 at 9:58 am

In the before photo I look pregnant, and in the after it looks like I’ve given birth and am skinny again, and you’ve become more blonde. So, improvements all around I guess. Ha! Thanks again for coming in, I’m so glad you’re happy with your hair.

  • 20 Megan // Jul 29, 2011 at 10:05 am

Love a bun AND my hair down with the front bangs twisted off my forehead and bobby-pinned to the side.

  • 21 melanie // Jul 29, 2011 at 10:14 am

having seriously injured my hand this summer i actually am not able to do anything myself. my favorite hair style has been asking my boyfriend to give me a pony tail, then walking around in the heat with a very lob-sided “do” and looking like a lunatic!

  • 22 Katherine // Jul 29, 2011 at 10:19 am

I don’t remember the bangs time. When was it? I remember high school, though. :)

  • 23 Hotsy Malone // Jul 29, 2011 at 10:20 am

Your hair looks amazing.  Loving the blonde!  Just got my hair cut, gave in to the fact that I have curly/wavy hair and this layered, longer in front and side swept bangs is the easiest I have had in a long time.  Need to actually update my photos showing the new do.

  • 24 Maggie // Jul 29, 2011 at 10:26 am

With naturally curly hair the only way to wear it in the summer is beachy waves until it gets too hot and winds up in a low ponytail. Trying to tame the frizz is a never ending battle in the humidity.

  • 25 Lynda@Me and My Pink Mixer // Jul 29, 2011 at 11:48 am

You hair looks so pretty!  My favorite summer hair is pulling my hair up on the sides and putting in a pretty clip.  Keeps my hair out of my face!

  • 26 Kendra // Jul 29, 2011 at 12:01 pm

    Side pony or beach waves!

  • 27 Sarah H // Jul 29, 2011 at 12:11 pm

So hard to choose a favorite style because there are so many… I love beach waves, the side pony, stick straight hair, and loose curls!

    Hope I win :)

    Sarah

  • 28 Leah // Jul 29, 2011 at 12:31 pm

I love braids and loose waves! Anything that doesn’t require much work since I’m practically sweating when I put any time into my hair in this Georgia heat!

  • 29 Hannah // Jul 29, 2011 at 12:39 pm

Utah’s summer’s are always burning. I like a high bun right on the top of my head, maybe with a cute headband or some earrings if I’m going somewhere. Or if it’s not too hot: I like to leave my hair down with it’s natural waves.

  • 30 Mallory Robinson // Jul 29, 2011 at 12:55 pm

I love my hair in a bun on the top of my head. Love a messy bun in the summer! Too humid here for anything else ;)

    Mallory1031 at gmail dot com

  • 31 Kristen // Jul 29, 2011 at 12:55 pm

favorite style is the easiest – some curling cream on wet hair and let it hair dry into nice curls. summer works well for my curly hair.

  • 32 Marlana // Jul 29, 2011 at 1:21 pm

Living in hot and humid florida I usually feel like I have no choice but a plain pony tail during the summer which is super bummer. I wish I could do the side pony tail you did but my hair’s too short for that. Any ideas for hair pulled back for medium length hair?

  • 33 Eliana // Jul 29, 2011 at 1:37 pm

    love pony tails!

  • 34 Eddie // Jul 29, 2011 at 2:51 pm

    your hair looks great!
i personally love a side braid for summer (regular or fishtail). laid-back, feminine, and keeps the hair away from your neck so you stay cool :)

  • 35 Bethany Davis // Jul 29, 2011 at 3:05 pm

It’s hot in Phoenix, AZ and therefore I am all over rocking some short hair.  Longer in front (just below the cheek) to frame my face and stacked in back.  I keep trying to grow it back out but find that it takes to long in the in-betweens.

  • 36 Bethany Davis // Jul 29, 2011 at 3:07 pm

Marlana, When my hair is short, or medium length I get it up by using bobby pins and sorta making a messy pin-up all over my head.  I usually add a headband or something for added cuteness.  It works great and actually makes you look like you have super long/curly hair :-)

  • 37 Katy // Jul 29, 2011 at 3:12 pm

Bethany — Ooh, I love that idea!

I also just saw this tutorial for short hair in curls — it’s not pulled back, but still really cute!  http://www.theglamourai.com/2011/07/diy-curly-locks.html

  • 38 Lindsey // Jul 29, 2011 at 3:43 pm

I am extremely lucky in that my hair can either be curly or straight and it looks great both ways. But during the summer, my hair gets wavy and gross so I prefer curly. The humidity helps it stay wavy and I LOVE it! It makes my morning routine so much easier! Love the blond.

  • 39 lauri // Jul 29, 2011 at 4:56 pm

I love beachy waves.. even though I have a short Bob.. my stylist shows me how to still achieve this look

I would love to win this set of products

  • 40 Hil // Jul 29, 2011 at 5:19 pm

Nothing better than blonde, side-swept bangs, and beach waves. Thanks for offering this giveaway!

  • 41 Jennifer E // Jul 29, 2011 at 7:38 pm

In this heat I have to go with a ponytail!

  • 42 Tina // Jul 29, 2011 at 8:55 pm

A trim every couple of months and clipped up to fell fresh in this heat.

  • 43 Lisa H // Jul 29, 2011 at 9:30 pm

Who can beat beachy waves?? But when it’s just too hot, I have to go with a good french or fishtail braid.

  • 44 Marsha // Jul 29, 2011 at 9:45 pm

Wavy pony tails are cute an summery to me :)

  • 45 Carolyn // Jul 29, 2011 at 9:54 pm

My favorite style right now, is this sort of bohemian updo… It is so simple. A simple French braid in the front (bang area) to your ear. And then simply up in the back, kind of tousled. Styled right it looks gorgeous! And it really only takes 15-minutes! It is really hot where I live, so for the summer months any hair style that is out of my face and off my neck, is pretty much wonderful! =)

  • 46 Kelly // Jul 29, 2011 at 11:58 pm

I usually just put my hair up “ballet bun” style, but when I have the extra time to jazz it up a little, I love to twist my hair and pin it to the back!

After 10-15 minutes, tons of bobby pins, and hair spray, I get this —

  • 47 M // Jul 30, 2011 at 5:12 am

    a simple ponytail

  • 48 Susan // Jul 30, 2011 at 9:40 am

Short hair is always easy….just a little more product in the summer so make it look a tad messy. Love It!

  • 49 Cara // Jul 30, 2011 at 9:41 am

It looks great! I also am guilty of not getting my hair cut often enough, especially after I graduated and moved out of my parents’ house and have been too scared to try a new stylist near me (my hair takes forever to grow, if I get a bad haircut I’m stuck with it for a year!)

I can’t deal with hot weather, I usually am forced to rock the ponytail in the summer. Either lowslung and to the side (and my hair is naturally curly and curls up into one big barrel curl when put into a ponytail when wet, so I found it pretty funny that you had a tutorial on curling ponytails!) or tossed up into a tight high pony (the one positive take-away from highschool cheerleading many moons ago, it someone makes me face look leaner, go figure!)

  • 50 Cristina // Jul 30, 2011 at 10:01 am

Looks great! The french braid is my favorite, with beachy waves a close second

  • 51 Zoey // Jul 30, 2011 at 10:27 am

Currently my favorite summer hairdo is anything up and off my neck. It is too hot for hair-down days!

  • 52 Fashion By Alicia // Jul 30, 2011 at 11:16 am

Since it is so hot this summer, I have been sporting a low bun.  I hate the heat and need my hair off my shoulders.

  • 53 ash // Jul 30, 2011 at 3:47 pm

It’s way too hot here in South Carolina– so I go with a ponytail or bun. I like to add a braid to make it a little more fun!

  • 54 Kara // Jul 30, 2011 at 7:04 pm

I love when I straighten my hair but my curly hair always wins with the humidity + sweat!  I’m rocking the curly hair that has been spruced up with a curling iron!

  • 55 Shasie // Jul 30, 2011 at 7:07 pm

My favorite summer hairstyle is a messy beach ponytail, and anything that keeps the hair off of the neck due to this heat!

Me, I’m a twist that sucker into a bun and hope I don’t melt before I can get it pinned type. :) I like having my hair loose, but with temperatures approaching the surface of the sun — up, it is. :)

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  • 57 Tej // Jul 30, 2011 at 9:15 pm

I have curly, curly hair and I love to wear it in a pineapple on top of my head. LOL.

  • 58 Annie // Jul 30, 2011 at 9:23 pm

I have curly hair, so beach waves are the easiest and my favorite thing to do in the summer [= But, since I live in Arizona and it’s ridiculously hot, I often pile it on top of my head in a messy bun.

  • 59 Lauren // Jul 31, 2011 at 12:19 am

I like the ponytail to the side look. It’s cute if people can pull if off. I’m not sure I could haha

  • 60 Amanda Perez // Jul 31, 2011 at 10:22 am

I’m lucky that I can just wash my hair and let it dry naturally.  It loose, slightly wavy, and just what I like.  If it’s too hot I go with a high ponytail

  • 61 Jeanette Canela // Jul 31, 2011 at 4:01 pm

I live in Arizona right now and the summer (which is half of the year) leads us to 120degree weather! So not good for my hair! I am currently obsessed with fish tail braids!! I loooove them!!!

  • 62 Glamamom // Jul 31, 2011 at 11:06 pm

I love a headband or scarf to push the hair back off the face…

  • 63 Kelly // Aug 1, 2011 at 12:33 pm

In the summer, less product for me is better! I love just putting a little mousse in my hair and letting the curls go…then when it gets too hot I love to do messy buns and low braids!

  • 64 jennifer // Aug 1, 2011 at 2:26 pm

I like lose half up dos because they allow you to still wear your hair partially down but make it look sooo much better on a hot day than sweat and frizzy all down look!

  • 65 Paulina // Aug 1, 2011 at 11:48 pm

Favorite hairstyle is beachy waves for sure!!!

  • 66 Hannah // Aug 2, 2011 at 12:33 am

I like to wear my hair in a side-parted low ponytail or bun, with my bangs twisted and pinned to the sides.

  • 67 Amy @ The Savvy Kitchen // Aug 2, 2011 at 7:47 am

My favorite summer hair style is a side ponytail. Quick, easy and cute!

  • 68 Kari S. // Aug 6, 2011 at 8:38 pm

I tend to cut my hair short in the summer, the easier the better!
