Cranberry Sauce with Red Wine and Figs

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh cranberries
  • 1/2 cup red wine
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 4 dried figs, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt

Directions

  1. Warm the red wine and diced figs in a non-reactive saucepan just until the wine is heated through. Take the pan off the heat, cover it, and leave the figs to soak for 30 minutes so they can soften.
  2. Strain the figs, then pour the wine back into the same saucepan. Add the cranberries, candied orange, sugar, and allspice or cinnamon, cover the pan, and cook over medium heat until the cranberries are tender and have popped, about 10 minutes.
  3. Take the saucepan off the heat, then fold the figs and vinegar into the cranberries.
