How to Make Homemade Breadcrumbs

Ingredients

  • 4 slices bread, about 2 to 3 cups
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 pinch ground black pepper

Directions

  1. Make the crumbs: For the fastest route, use a food processor. Trim off the crusts if you like, pull the bread into smaller pieces, and pulse until you have rough crumbs. For a finer texture, keep pulsing a little longer.
  2. You can freeze the crumbs for another day, or toast them if you plan to use them within a few days. To toast them, warm 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Stir in the bread crumbs, fresh or frozen, along with the thyme, salt, and ground black pepper. Cook for 5 to 6 minutes, stirring the whole time, until the crumbs turn golden and crunchy. Let them cool all the way, then spoon them into an airtight jar and keep them on the countertop for up to a week.
